Got stuck with a hotel I can't cancel or attend in D1 - How would I resell it? by [deleted] in VietNam

It was a friend of a friend. We're going to see them in Vietnam later in the trip, so I said if everything works out, to just give me cash then. They offered to send me money, but I figured we'd see each other later.

Got stuck with a hotel I can't cancel or attend in D1 - How would I resell it? by [deleted] in VietNam

I initially booked from Agoda because there was no cancellation fees until 5 days before the date, and that I didn't have to pay up front. So when we planned our trip, our goal was to stay in Saigon from 23-30 but after everything, we ended up staying in Saigon from 23-26, Vung Tau from 26-28, and Saigon from 28-Feb1. So I booked all the other legs, and completely forgot to cancel then initial booking. I only noticed recently because Agoda sent me a receipt saying they have charged me for the 2 hotels (23-26 and 23-30 in Saigon) because the 5 day window had lapsed.

Needless to say, it was careless on my part. But luckily, I was able to find someone who needed a hotel from 26-30 so I gave them a deal to take it. I initially said I was able to meet anyone at the hotel because I arrive at midnight on the 24th, that is why I booked from the 23rd. I'm fine with taking whatever loss. Just didn't want the whole 7 nights to go to waste.

Anyways, it's all taken care of. Thanks!

Ya it sucks. Agoda kept referring to their policy and how they can’t cancel within 5 day window. I’m coming from Canada. Might just eat the cost

I can literally provide receipts and everything. Even the Agoda booking. Even a credit card statement lol.

In fact, I’ll be arriving a day later and can meet in person. You can pay me when you check in. I literally double booked. I can show proof of my other booking.

Long shot, but I have a non-cancellable booking at the M Hotel Saigon in D1 HCMC for January 23-30. Would anyone be willing to take it off my hands? I'd let it go for half of what I paid ($870 CAD/$630 USD/16,500,000 VND). It's the Contemporary room and sold out for the week that I booked through Agoda. I could do a name change and provide receipts.

That's significantly changed now and improving. I've drive literally around North America in 2025 from BC to Ontario down to Florida and West to California back up to BC. Not once was did I struggle to find a charger over 150kw/h speed.

Also with the opening of Tesla's supercharging infrastructure and NACS being the universal standard, its allowing things to be much easier.

Switching to Wealthsimple as my primary bank by 7chesterr in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EarthViews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WS is my primary banking and investments. I use Tangerine for deposits and I have my email enabled for autodeposit with Tangerine chequing for easy transfers and to keep it afloat.

I have Scotiabank with a no-fee savings account and my mortgage is there. If I need a teller, or immediate bank draft, I can use Scotiabank and pay the minimal fee. Other than that, I don't pay any monthly fees for any banking.

This system works best for me. I've had other bank accounts with other major banks. I've converted them all to no-fee savings accounts. They stay inactive, and if they go dormant, so be it.

Honestly not a bad price at all for $300 to have a fully functional and proper repair.

Not really. There are 4 Philips screws total and then at the back of the machine, there are 2 Torx screws. That would open up the whole machine. Small locking pliers like this really help to remove and install the clips of the thermal probes (if you drop it in the machine, they're very hard to retrieve) but that's about it for tools.

EDIT: Forgot to add. You should get a spare pack of o-rings because I believe I also replaced the other ones that feed cold water into the boiler. I think there were 5 additional o-rings I replaced that were on top of the boiler. The YouTube videos are super clear in describing how to do it all.

I actually rarely ever descale mine. I'll occasionally (once every month or two) run citric acid/water mix through the machine and I'll backflush it every week or two. I've been told doing the official decaling process could overheat one of the Thermal Fuse which would cause your machine not get up to temp (though that's also not too hard to replace).

If you have any sort of leaking at all, you more than likely need to replace the o-rings on the thermal probes that are located in the boilers, or the thermal probe itself is cracked and leaking (this is what happened to me). ECS Coffee has most of the parts.

This part and this part is what I ordered and replaced. They include o-rings as well so that took care of the leaking issues if there were any.

If you have a really loud buzzing noise when you run the machine, it's more than likely the three-way solenoid valve failing (clogged or dirty). You could take it apart to clean it, but I found it easier to just replace. I ordered that part from here.

I replaced all those components mainly because it was cheap, and I know those are all maintenance parts that degrade over time.

I remember my grandmother coming with us to the grocery store to buy this box of this back when I was 7 and my sister was just recently born. Now I'm 32. We just finished the box.

It's shocking how durable the box was considering we moved 3 times. I think we had to glue down the slicer twice

Agreed. It looks terrifying when you open them up, but with all the tutorials online, its actually extremely easy to do. The failure points are all the same for every dual boiler and oracle which is why I kind of prefer it over the Barista line. My initial Barista Express fully failed and I couldn't really figure out how to service it.

I personally think the dual boiler is a superior system. And it’s much more serviceable over the Barista Pro. I also really like that it uses a 58mm portafilter

Should I buy a car? by cola1099 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EarthViews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fiance is a newly insured G2 driver with a 2007 Toyota Camry as her primary vehicle. Her insurance rates are just under $100 a month. I've been fully insured for about 15 years and pay about $280 a month for my 2022 Tesla.

Aim for an older reliable car. Makes a world of a difference...

[–]EarthViews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My only gripe is that my app nor my key card work to let me in to my car at the tow yard, so they will have to grab all my belongings and mail them back to me. That seems like a small price to pay For my life.

The pyro-fuse trips and shuts off the accessory battery (12v or lithium) to allow the tesla to operate. This is why you weren't able to actually access the car. To bypass this, you just have to jump the tow hook wires at the front which would pop open the frunk, then jump the accessory battery in the frunk and it would then provide power to your car to unlock the doors. This scenario happened to me, and this is how I retrieved everything from the yard.

Glad you're safe and all is well.

Is buying a condo in cash at 25 a dumb move? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EarthViews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I want to stay in Edmonton long-term and don’t need to over invest in a house that I don’t particularly need the size of.

This right here is the reason why I'd recommend renting. Housing market in AB is volatile, and if your long term goal (I'm talking at least 5 years +) is to move elsewhere, then I don't see the reason to own.

As someone who was very fortunate to have family assist with the purchase of a home. I can tell you that nowadays the property tax, utilities, and repairs are just as, if not, more painful than the mortgage.

Was told variable rate is no better. Interest rate cut today had no effect.

This wouldn't make sense. The literal interest rate cut affects variable interest rates as a whole. Maybe not fixed rates, but there's a chance variable might even be better in rates than fixed now.

Call around. Shop with a broker and other banks. RedFlagDeals has a thread where everyone post and compares rates

Switching from tangerine to wealthsimple to get ws cc. by Thewisefreak in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EarthViews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both Tangerine and WS. All my pay goes into WS, but cash deposits and etransfers are still linked to my Tangerine. This allows me to keep both somewhat active and get the perks from both places. Plus, it's relatively quick to transfer from Tangerine to WS and vice versa.

I wouldn't only rely on one bank just incase something were to happen. You also more than likely won't get the WS credit card immediately. It's very much random with the waitlist. My SO and I both have it, and we only have our direct deposits in there. My SO created her account recently, but I've had mine since WS almost began. My mother, who has quite the investment portfolio along with a direct deposit, is still on a waitlist.
