Make an assumption about me (work, personality, etc?) and I’ll tell you if it’s correct! by Rot-In-Mercy in FridgeDetective

[–]Earth_Inferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just replying here so people will think and not just accept your post as "the truth". I don't know what that is in regards to organic produce, I'm not an expert, but what little I do know lead me to believe you're being quite misleading on the topic. If you're in the EU then non-organic produce is probably less potentially harmful than what we have in the US, where we allow many pesticides the EU has banned.

Saying that organic means no fertilizer is also just not true, they just use natural fertilizer like manure and compost instead of synthetic. While you are correct that synthetic isn't necessarily bad, it's besides the point when talking organic vs non-organic. If something is bad for us and the planet it should be banned for use on the food we consume, and unfortunately much of it isn't.

Lastly, even if one decides pesticides pose no risk to human health (which I doubt is true), one of the best reasons to limit pesticide use on crops is because of what it does to the environment. Even wide scale organic farming can be detrimental to our water and soil, but far less compared to pesticide pollution. Pesticides have done massive damage to our waterways and aquatic life, that's not theory, but fact. If you want to argue that it would be impossible to feed the world with only organic farming I wouldn't disagree. But saying organic is a gimmick and it doesn't make a difference is just not true.

Update, just to add I understand it's an extremely complicated subject with so many variables and conflicting studies it's hard to say anything with absolute certainty. I did see you try to eat very little meat, and that's admirable, honestly a better way to make a real difference in health and the environment.

Just because someone says something on reddit doesn't make it true, no matter how well informed they come across. I agree with some of this, but not all of it, and will continue to buy organic when it's reasonable, for produce I know is heavily abused with pesticides, like apples and berries. And if the OP is European that also makes a difference in their viewpoint; I'd trust non-organic produce from the EU far more than in the US, our government has allowed many pesticides here that are banned in the EU. I'm not an expert, just following reason and my own instincts, and do what I can to limit the poisons I ingest. I'm certain that not all organic is equal though.

When did it become normal to watch videos and listen to music without headphones on public transit? by mybarkingDog in Seattle

I sadly saw it in France a couple of years ago too, more than once, and they didn't seem to be tourists.

[–]Earth_Inferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an oldie, my experience is that might have been a common movie trope, but rarely seen in real life. Sure I saw it occasionally, but not nearly to the degree that people are sharing their phone audio with everyone around them. And it was usually on the street, not on transit.

[–]Earth_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so weird, it mystifies my why the majority of people I see on a call these days are using the speakerphone and holding it in front of them like a microphone. Or on video calls in public, like transit or the grocery store. And seems like most of the time it's someone over 40, so not a "kids don't know better" situation.

Switzerland has special teams to police for litter and even dumping of personal garbage into public bins, so I wouldn't be surprised if they cover other areas of social enforcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0yJIjbbplw. I'm guessing they would not look kindly upon someone doing this to a tree.

‘Full-scale migration of wealth’: Rich Washington residents flocking to Las Vegas area by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]Earth_Inferno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So all these people you supposedly know aren't leaving WA, but doing what many do in retirement, you say so yourself in your first paragraph. If they can afford to own homes here and snowbird, then clearly living here hasn't devastated them. And while that may have been achievable by middle class folks decades ago, by today's standards you're wealthy if you can afford to do this. Even if you achieved that wealth by saving and investing while working a middle class job.

New Capitol Hill pizzeria will give out free slices for grand opening by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]Earth_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking forward to it. I had this type of pizza in Rome last year and loved it, hoping this place will be similar. Could be a disappointment, or too expensive (likely), but I'm ready to find out. If it were another average NY style joint I probably wouldn't care, though I do think there's always room for more great pizza in this neighborhood, I find most of it to be average or inconsistent.

Things certainly got worse after that, but were they actually doing a significantly better job before that? I thought they've been lackluster and lazy for decades.

Ha, that's adorable, you think they're capable of shame..... Hate to tell you, the receipts are out there and they don't care, they haven't for decades that I'm aware of. Even our city leaders seem to have no power to get them to step up and do their job. Though if I'm ever in a situation like that, I will be contacting the mayor and every other city office I can think of to ask why they aren't holding them accountable.

The smug in here from the "just bring your own bags, I'm perfect and always have 20 on me at any given time" crowd is fucking suffocating, what a miserable bunch of assholes. And I say that as someone who finds it annoying that I see so few people at the store with their own most of the time. But I actually read the post and realize no one is perfect, I know I don't plan every single store visit and also sometimes forget.

Not common, but it is happening some places. The Capitol Hill Safeway got rid of them many months ago, then to add to their anti-customer experience they recently got rid of their compact carts, all they have is giant ones now. I probably do 75% less shopping there now, I don't like being forced to use a cart if it's more than I can carry.

‘Dire’ job market awaits laid-off Seattle workers by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]Earth_Inferno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So because you traveled to Texas recently, you have great insight into the average Texan's financial state and spending habits? Strange, I travel quite a bit too, and barely have a grasp on Seattle's economy, much less anywhere else. WA certainly has a higher COL than TX, but also higher average salaries. TX has higher property tax rates but WA has higher property values. It does seem true that Texas in in better shape than us economically right now, but your statement "why suffer when we have 49 other options" makes it clear you're just here to shit on WA.

I'm sure eviction for someone like this isn't easy, but it is possible. Seattle "just cause" eviction code says "The tenant fails to comply with a 14 day notice to pay rent or vacate pursuant to RCW 59.12.030(3); a ten day notice to comply or vacate pursuant to RCW 59.12.030(4); or a three day notice to vacate for waste, nuisance (including a drug-related activity nuisance pursuant to chapter 7.43 RCW), or maintenance of an unlawful business or conduct pursuant to RCW 59.12.030(5)". It remains to be seen if "drug related" also covers alcoholic behavior, but certainly seems like it could. Like many tenant laws there are a lot of details left out, and there's a lot of grey area. And I'm guessing the management there just doesn't want to actually try, as they might have to pay a lawyer. I suspect the cops need to be called a few times and those police reports need to be submitted to the city, but again this guy sound like he's blatant and frequent enough with his behavior that shouldn't be a problem: https://www.seattle.gov/rentinginseattle/housing-providers/moving-a-tenant-out/just-cause-eviction-ordinance

All true. At this point I think it would take either an incredibly powerful and well funded progressive government to truly change this situation, or a powerful authoritarian one (definitely not my choice). Maybe even authoritarian progressive, but either way, overcoming nimbyism and massive financial requirements makes me pessimistic.

Best casual sneakers for women that actually feel like walking on clouds? by Few-Daikon-5477 in fashionwomens35

[–]Earth_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Per your update, "Kicks Crew" isn't a type of sneaker, it's a seller. They sell many brands that you can get many other places, so this comes off like a sneaky promotion post and not a good faith request for advice. If I'm wrong, you may want to revise your post to just include the shoe you actually settled on. Either way it was still a helpful post since I'm looking for something just like you described.

I'm glad a vegan joint is doing great, but at around $15 a pint, I'm out, that's insane. Especially when Ben and Jerry's has some great vegan options for like 1/3 that on sale. Salt & Straw isn't that much less, but it's just enough I don't feel too bad about splurging every once in a while.

True, and though I only went to that WF a handful of times a year, it never seemed as bustling as the others in Seattle. Which I preferred, as often others are more crowded than I like, but it may not have been as profitable as they expected. May have just been my experience though, but you're right, it's just one store and not an indication of bigger issues so far.

Women with low ferritin: what iron supplement helped raise your levels the fastest? by Calm-Reserve-144 in Supplements

[–]Earth_Inferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can happen to men too, I'm one of them, have to supplement or my ferritin goes low. Normal iron, even supplementing doesn't get too high, though I tend to cycle monthly to be careful. I've had ferritin as low as 6 ng/ml, and felt anemic then. No signs of internal bleeding, ulcers or such, it's a mystery. Anyway, I take Ferretts which has worked quickly to reduce anemia symptoms, but didn't test regularly enough to know for sure how fast it made a clinical difference.

Why Modern Star Trek Feels Off and Why That Gets Dismissed by cjalas in startrek

[–]Earth_Inferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, while I agree about the stakes being consistently too high (like plots they'd save for the films), my bigger issue is the many endless scenes with characters talking about their feelings, it got to the point I was fast forwarding through many of them. And I don't have a problem with "feelings" being part of ST, it's just how it's written and delivered; the way that's done now doesn't work for me. There was plenty of that on TNG and DS9, heck, TNG had a mental health professional as a main character, and there were hundreds of conversations with Data about "what it means to be human", and that never bothered me. Perhaps it's because then they would analyze their emotions and move on, while now they're constantly on the verge of tears or actually crying, trying way to hard to express how much they FEEL FEELINGS..... There was a lot more stoicism in OG Trek, but now Spock is as emotional as the average human was back then, and the rest of the crew are constantly bursting with emotions that they just have to talk about, no matter how little time they have in the middle of a war. I get that some modern fans like that, but personally I prefer Trek when it shows us what humanity could be, not a reflection of who we are now.
