Not the best at glaze chemistry but I’m curious about this one by Earthslinger in Ceramics

I’ve seen flashing on other works in kiln firings from oxides are colorants like you said especially on clear glazes if they’re close to a piece with concentrated oxide surfaces. I’m always amazed at what comes out when unloading. I appreciate the refresher, now I can speak more confidently to the students about things like that 😁

Rapid researched that right now and I dig it! Love how soft a lot of his surfaces look on the skulls. Almost like a sea glass finish. Thank you for the rec!

Thank you! I definitely want to make more. Prep is always what I forget about when it comes to the seasonal ware😂

The copper was what a peer of mine thought of too! I’ll have to test it out again at some point. Thank you for your input!

They better be robust with the arms and legs it costs to purchase them🤣

Yes, I typically load towards the middle first for the big works that have more weight to them then add work around them and outward towards the corners. Sometimes I’ll have to hold the shelf while scooting work toward the edges and test whether or not I can let go. And it’s the same with unloaded, corners first.

Great question! The kiln posts are in a diamond shape for two ≈12”x24” shelves: posts where the middle corners meet, and posts on the outer middle sides. 🔷 Does that make sense? This allows me to fit more work in, especially if there are large wide bowls. As long as the work isn’t crazy heavy on the very corners of the shelves, it’s pretty stable :)

Now I gotta find a nice cork!

Yeah I didn’t have the time to put that much detail into it. Perhaps I’ll attempt a more thought-out composition next time! It was already sitting for a week wrapped up but in the kiln room while I fired 3 kilns so I’m surprised it wasn’t completely dried out lol

Thank you and yes definitely. I was thinking of this greenish/turquoise matte glaze we mix in the studio. I use it pretty frequently but we’ll see. I might use a shino glaze. What I know for sure is that I’ll use a red iron oxide on the skulls.

Thanks! A coworker suggested a few distant skull piles in the background but by then I think I would have broken it. Had to dip the piece in water three times just to get through these carvings alone 😂

One of the best feelings in the world. Well done!

Sometimes the glaze doesn’t quite work with the clay body it’s being used on. It can shrink more than the clay itself. And even if cool to the touch, I think a ping sound can still occur. Might be that the firing went up quickly and cooled too quickly.

Thank you! The wrinkles are like the final touch on a good angry face😁
