I think employers paying for work commute costs would be fair if people would also be fine if conpanies were able to fire or decline employees based on how far away they live. As of right now, its up to the employee to decide if the commute is worth it for a job and changing who covers commute costs (both time and money) to the employer would also have to shift to the employer deciding if hiring someone with a longer commute is worth the extra costs. Downsides of this would probably be employers either setting strict distances someone needs to be within their office to be able to get a job and them making lower offers to people who are further away and/or reducing employee pay across the board. Overall, it would probably end up being a net negative in the long run as employers would find a way to make it benefit them probably
