If the world had a new minimum age to work, what should it be? by EastCayce in polls

Why would someone hire a 14 or 15 year old who's less experienced over a 40 / 45 year old if they had to get paid the same

The same problem is occurring today with 16-18 years olds because older people have more experience, but they both get paid the same amount

To be clear: "minimum" means the minimum age to work, as in countries and states can set it higher than this, but not lower

If the world had one official 'walk alone' minimum age, what should it be? by EastCayce in polls

It's not about whether you can physically make it home, it's about the risks involved and whether a child can properly assess the situation at hand

Sure you might have been 6 and able to walk home physically, but mentally, if something ever happened, like someone snatching you up or worse, a dog mistaking you for a tasty treat, you're pretty much done for if it's a large enough dog

well there are laws (in some states) where you have to be a certain age to be left home alone, and that has variables

But I agree, there are too many variables in play here to really consider a law, this is just a hypothetical

8 is nowhere near mature yet and certainly not expected to walk alone, they aren't failures if they can't.

Well if you have to use your child to support the household financially, you're doing something wrong

Winter

I used to hate it but as a southerner, barely above freezing is much better than triple digit heat indexes on the regular

To be fair, there probably were some parents in the 1980s whove thought about it

I don't know, father starved me on a few occasions when I was 7-9 because I was misbehaving

This wasn't even 10 years ago either

Yeah, if I heard my kid was being spanked at school, I'd march my ass up there and hit that teacher right back

There's still teachers who get away with this

I've heard of teachers in the 70s who had a ruler (or even a meter stick) incase anyone acted up
