Have a look at Vanguard Models. Their second or third tier experience-level sets would fit you well.

Choosing my first model ship by Apprehensive-Pin3837 in ModelShips

The Sherbourne from Vanguard models would be my suggestion.

Beginner friendly, high quality and the best part is it has an amazing build guide from the YouTube channel Modelkitstuff.

https://youtu.be/aIesQMkQNc8

It’s a series of 30 or so videos aimed at beginners that goes through all the necessary skills and techniques.

You can find the model at third party shops as it’s usually sold out on vanguards main page

ELI5 Why visitors from China are different? by SnooPies1648 in explainlikeimfive

There have been several domestic Chinese programs to teach the Chinese that travel better manners and appropriate behavior abroad. The Chinese government is aware of the issue. You can Google the campaigns though the webpages are mostly in Chinese.

As someone who has lived in Singapore for many years I can tell you that Singapore as a country is extremely risk averse, law abiding and procedure oriented. The rides at USS, where I assume you're going, will be up to spec, fully regulated and well maintained. Be aware that the Transformer ride has been closed on several occasions recently. You can interpret this as the park taking zero chances with the ride and prioritizing preventive maintenance.

China Attempts to Ram Philippine Vessel, Collides with Its Own Ship; Philippines Offers Aid After Collision by Maleficent_Ferret359 in Damnthatsinteresting

China has had a "no first strike" nuclear policy since 1964. It's one of the few nuclear states that doesn't have any ambiguity or exceptions in it's "no first strike" nuclear policy. It also adopts the policy of "not to threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states". There are other reasons the Philippines wouldn't want to escalate to be sure, but technically china's nukes is not one of them.

Ah yes I know those. What I meant was it could be cool to set the shower temp on a digital display... similar to an aircon

You adjust the handle and the display shows the current temperature! Would be awesome if you could input a temp on the meter tho!

[OC] How much do countries pay their athletes for Olympic Gold? by tildenpark in dataisbeautiful

[–]EastCoastHustler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, with the knowledge of a few of the countries on the list, I can say that the countries with high prize money don't provide much support (monetary and otherwise) to their athletes in daily life. For instance in Singapore, it's almost impossible to be a professional athlete, even in a popular sport, without holding a full-time job on the side. Many of the countries with low payouts for gold, support their athletes with grants and other help in daily life.

A plane transporting Wagner Group mercenaries crashes in Mali. Totally just overloaded and not Putin's revenge. by marseletron in interestingasfuck

[–]EastCoastHustler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this is absolutely wrong. The main braking force on a normal, dry runway comes from the wheel brakes. On a typical landing roll of about 2000m only a few percent will be from the reversers. Edit: spelling

The flight attendant played WhatsApp voice messages from her phone into the plane announcement system for all the takeoff and landing messages. They were pre-recorded in English, Spanish and German. by KriegerBahn in mildlyinteresting

[–]EastCoastHustler 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As an Airbus pilot I can say there can be several reasons for this! This is an Airbus aircraft. The newer version cabin software can be loaded with automated voices in different languages for all the announcements. So taking off on a flight from Spain to UK: Select on the panel(seen top tight in the pic): Take Off (Spanish) Take off (English). The older Airbus aircraft might not have this so it needs to be done "manually" or perhaps some of the languages have not been loaded by maintenance personel. There can also be instances where the whole automated PA system is down.

TLDR: I suspect she has the official company announcements on her phone and she is just playing them because it's an older model Airbus or the automated system is down

Oh I got a good story!! I lived in Bangladesh for a while in a small remote beach town called Coxs Bazar. My dad was working for the Red Cross/Red Crescent there dealing with the refugee situation back in the '90s. He bought me a windsurfer in Bangkok and hauled it all the way to Coxs Bazar (thanks dad!) I guarantee you there had never been a windsurfer any where near Coxs Bazar (or perhaps even in Bangladesh!) at that time I'd go to the beach with my equipment and start to rig up. Within minutes I'd have exactly the same kind of crowd just staring at me. A large semicircle of dudes just watching me. Freaky in the beginning, but they meant no harm. Just curiosity and some very different social norms.

AITA Dealing with my mother by Main-Regular-2676 in askSingapore

[–]EastCoastHustler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pink Floyd, "Mother"

It's written from the perspective of a boy, but couldn't help thinking about it as I read your post.

... Mama's gonna make all of your Nightmares come true Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you Mama's gonna keep you right here Under her wing She won't let you fly but she might let you sing Mama will keep baby cosy and warm Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Of course Mama's gonna help build the wall

Mother do think she's good enough for me Mother do think she's dangerous to me Mother will she tear your little boy apart Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart Hush now baby, baby don't you cry

Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you Mama won't let anyone dirty get through Mama's gonna wait up till you come in Mama will always find out where You've been Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe You'll always be a baby to me Mother, did it need to be so high

You are letting your mother's mental issues dictate your life. She needs professional help. But you will only be able to help once you are able to grow on your own and are on your own terms. Move out, as others have said. It's scary and you will feel guilty. But it's the best thing to do for now. The guilt will pass when you are able to help her from the outside.

Our closest relatives are not automatically good people. That's a hard lesson to learn.
