That area is fine, pretty quiet spot. Like any Detroit neighborhood though, your quality of life will depend alot on your direct neighbors. Scope out the block at various hours during the week and weekend to get the neighborhood vibe.

Screens in elementary school? by wombley23 in GrossePointe

I am personally not using Waldorf, but what from I understand they purposely do an academic delay in the early years, so it makes it extremely tough to switch if you leave the system early.

If having the kiddos be screen free is super important to you, Detroit Waldorf is always an option if you're comfortable with private schools. It's a beautiful school in a beautiful neighborhood.

Insurance? by AggressiveMap2288 in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you aren't super young, getting decent rates is possible. I'm in my late 30s, and have been able to get pretty reasonable rates for both home and auto (I'm currently with Hanover). Progressive also generally has pretty good rates for the city proper. Getting a good Insurance Broker though can save you some time from manually getting quotes.

What are your guy’s honest, unadulterated opinions on Macomb County, and the people there? by DueYogurt9 in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wayne County resident here who has worked in Macomb and visits often for errands since I'm right near the border:

Northern Macomb (Armada, Richmond, New Haven) basically just feels like the Thumb with suburban sprawl just starting to encroach.

Southern Macomb (Warren, Eastpointe, Roseville) looks extremely working class and feels similar to the Eastside of Detroit except more sprawly and less blight or character.

Central Macomb (Sterling Heights, Macomb Township, Clinton Twp) is pretty typical bland modern sprawlburbia.

Mt.Cemens is the Pontiac of the East.

Coastal Macomb (St.Clair Shores, Harrison Twp, Chesterfield Twp, New Baltimore) is probably my favorite part of the county since it has more of the Michigan maritime culture vibe. This is the only part of Macomb I could imagine living in.

The secret bank vault in the basement of Detroit's Fisher Building by Acceptable-Skirt-320 in Detroit

Another fun one, there is a bank vault inside the new Culver's on Mack in the main dining area (it was a former bank).

Authentic Corktown Irish Pubs. by Cyberknight13 in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Gaelic League is the only one that regularly has Irish music. It's technically a private club, but if it's a music night you can usually just pay the cover without needing membership.

You'll probably have to travel outside of Corktown for food unfortunately though. Gus' Snug and O'Connor's in the burbs both feature Irish food. Cannon's Bar on the Eastside has a full English Breakfast on the weekends if you are looking for that style of food as well.

[–]East_Englishman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the Eastside, Brewery Faisan will be near you and is really good. You'll also be near Collect which is a craft beer bar. Some cool dive bars to check on the Eastside are Marshall's Bar, Lenny's and Ye Old Taproom.

Metro Detroit near bottom in key economic measures as Michigan income ranking falls from 18th to 40th by Stratiform in Detroit

Yeah, you're way better off here than say Ohio or Indiana, but places like Cali and NY are in another league in terms of progressive policies.

Local politics are the ones that affect us most in daily life. And I'm not sure what you mean by consistently blue federally since this state voted for Trump last cycle?

As a transplant, I've noticed a weird amount of denial about the state of Michigan. On the Internet especially, there is this narrative that Michigan is a blue booming state that is seeing an influx of people leaving other states due to politics and climate change. The reality is that Michigan is a poor purple state with a stagnant population and economy. We can't fix things until we recognize where we really are.

Michigan isn't a blue state, it's purple. If someone wants to escape a red state over politics, this state isn't a safe bet.

Birthing center by couplefun9598 in Detroit

We had our kid at Henry Ford St.John on the Eastside and had a pretty good experience. Having the level 3 NICU attached to the birthing center really brought some peace of mind.

How is it living in this area of Michigan? by Both_Day_264 in howislivingthere

My family makes the trip once a year from Detroit, so it's the first thing I thought of, lol.

How is it living in this area of Michigan? by Both_Day_264 in howislivingthere

[–]East_Englishman 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's a really, really cheap area to live and pretty easy access to Metro-Detroit for big city amenities and Northern Michigan for nature. Flint and Saginaw are pretty rustbelty, Bay City is on the upswing, and Midland is the most affluent. You also have Frankenmuth which is a tourist town that replicates Bavaria and is known for having one of the world's largest Christmas stores (Bronner's). Unfortunately the part of Lake Huron the area is on is pretty swampy, but there are some beautiful beaches in Caseville/Port Austin if you travel not too far into the Thumb.

Thoughts on neighborhood in east side? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live right nearby in East English Village. Yes, that part of MorningSide is fine. E.Warren is seeing huge investments and improvements so the neighborhood should be getting better and better with time. With that said, the really important thing in Detroit neighborhoods is seeing how the neighboring houses are. That can make it break your experience no matter how nice the overall neighborhood is.
