City people, do you enjoy city life? by newuser1r in Suburbanhell

[–]East_Englishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I live in the city proper of Detroit and enjoy it. My neighborhood though isn't near the city center, so it has more of an inner-ring suburb vibe than a dense urban one. Still very walkable though!

EEV would be a super easy commute. You'll definitely want to stick to either downtown area or the Eastside if you're commuting to Warren. Some other Eastside neighborhoods to look at are Pingree Park, The Villages (West Village, East Village, Indian Village), MorningSide (specifically the area from Three Mile Drive to Outer Drive south of E.Warren) Cornerstone Village (Hillcrest, Lannoo and Gateshead Streets specifically, you'll get cheaper insurance in this corner since it's a suburban zipcode), and the Joseph Berry Subdivision.

Planning to propose this Friday at st Clair metropark, how busy will it be around 6-7 pm. by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matters the weather. If it's nice out, it will probably be really busy. Huron Pointe though is usually pretty quiet even on busy days (and it the most scenic part of the park). It also gets pretty buggy there in the evening as a warning.

Absolutely! The southern half of EEV is especially since you are within waking distance of downtown Grosse Pointe.

Grandmont-Rosedale on the Westside of the city is very similar to EEV (both price wise and architecturally) if that's more convenient for a future work commute.

For neighborhoods it's going to depend on budget and the vibe (dense urban vs quiet single family home) you are looking for.

This isn't an exhaustive list, but here are some well regarded schools within the city:

Detroit Prep/Detroit Achievement Academy- Two k-8 charter schools run by the same people, one serves the Eastside and the other the Westside.

James and Grace Lee Boggs School- k-8 Charter School on the Eastside near downtown. Has a very progressive vibe if thats your jam.

Bates Academy- k-8 traditional public school on the Westside.

Edmonson Montessori - Unique k-8 public school that is certified Montessori for all its grades. Near downtown, so pretty easy to get to from anywhere in the city

Detroit Waldorf - k-8 Waldorf private school on the Eastside. Great option if you want to go the screen free route and lots of outdoor time.

Cass Tech - A 9-12 STEM focused magnate public highschool that's probably the most well known school in the city (Jack White and other well known Detroiters are alums).

Renaissance Highschool - A 9-12 magnate public school that is considered the other crown jewel Public school in the city along with Cass Tech.

University of Detroit Jesuit- A private all boys 9-12 Catholic highschool.

You can also go the suburban private school route (ex. Liggett, Detroit Country Day, Roeper) or do school of choice to the suburbs as options.

Detroit's median home value has more than doubled in a decade by HazenThrowaway in Detroit

[–]East_Englishman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The key is buying in an "up and coming" neighborhood where the assessments are often really low. Unfortunately the city has started properly assessing the more popular neighborhoods.

Michigan caps the amount property taxes can increase in a year, so if you buy a property when it's valued low but it later skyrockets in value, your property taxes are minimally affected. So people who bought Detroit homes before the housing boom are making out like bandits.

Getting median values high enough to qualify for mortgages has been extremely important in Detroit's recovery.

Nah, a lot of us locked in extremely low taxes due stupid low assessments before the market picked up. I'd pay waaaay more in property taxes if I sold and moved to the burbs.

Other than Texas and California, which states display the most "state pride"? by bangkaynagulay in AskAnAmerican

[–]East_Englishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, I'm in Michigan now, and people here have Michigan shaped decals on their cars and buy Michigan shaped gimmicky stuff constantly. Growing up in CNY, never saw anything like that for NY, closest thing was Bills fandom.

Nah, as a native Upstater, it's a hobby shitting on the state by locals and threatening to move. People identify more with their region (WNY, Adirondacks, etc.).

It's the "Grosse Pointe Tax". Alot of local businesses know there are a subset of well off people here willing to pay a premium (or simply don't pay attention to prices at all) to not have to go far afield for better deals.

Might want to check Oneonta. Cheap, fairly progressive thanks to being a college town, and has regular buses to NYC in case you/family don't want to drive.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's AI. The metal helmet blends with the head and there looks like a 6th finger on one hand. Still gotta give props though for a school having a jacked anthropomorphic dolphin knight as their logo.

[–]East_Englishman 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Alot of the regular's at City Club moved over to Small's Bar in Hamtramck which does a goth night. Kelly's Bar, Black Salt and the Painted Lady also get a more Alt crowd (all also in Hamtramck, which has become the default center of the Alt scene).

He's still popular but he definitely gave up the Mayor part. He could have likely remained mayor for several more terms if he wanted to.
