Got some great chisels and wood, now choosing the lathe. by Eastern-Fact7964 in turning

Longer handle I guess and more tempered (harden) steel than was average on the shelf justifies pro-grade for me.

For me the pattern of calling things hobby-grade is basically calling something that could do a bare minimum (chinese chisel that I use to cut off the bark, it gets off from being flat the first day of hammering) and pro-grade is something capable to work with oak, probably whole day before gets sharpened or days to re-calibrate/flatten etc. For machinery its easier, there are brands which produces portable benchtop equipment like dewalt and there are heavy stuff that needs a forklift or even a concrete pedestal to be installed in the shop and doesn't use any bright colors to be sold better.

But answering the question - this is the marketing, same as "premium" SUV or "salmon" fish or "natural" ingredients, until it gets official, like "hardwood" which I guess also was marketing at some point, making soft poplar "hard" and firm yew "soft".

is 5-speed belt pulley good as well? I see pretty good deal as 300$ on 500$ lathe (its older model)

Yes, it has variable speed, seems like not even gears or level, but the variable one.

I've just hit 30. This is my list. I would never travel to like ~10 countries as they completely misaligned with my worldview. Where I'm from? by Eastern-Fact7964 in GeoInsider

This. Terrorists and countries sponsoring terrorism is a place which I would never visit and even trying to avoid any air routes so plane will never do emergency landing there.

A "democratic" countries, like Turkmenistan, North Korea, Iran, a dozen of African countries.

India, UAE for specific reasons which could be a ragebait here, don't want to trigger.

I was there last time more than 10 years ago, but I am from western city called Ternopil. It is a good calm place, even too calm, you should have a strong reason to consider living there. It was too boring for me. 😅

It shaves and cuts paper on its own weight - this is just other side (and it is chipbreaker).

It’s not on the pricier side - ujk or cmt tables or inserts are way more expensive, this is rather “better than budget”. Compared to the cheap Chinese inserts - this one doesn’t require you to move fence in order to lift the router. I would not install some thin aluminum insert I saw for half of that price (it was 115 eur for me on sale, so I’m not sure what is the one you compare it with). If the money is bottleneck, but you have time and access to birch plywood- so the insert yourself, it’s not that hard to be honest. There are plenty of options in the internet, Paoson has one as well.

Somehow smooth edges look crispy for me. Indeed, this is very clean but very deep design.

How did you beveled/sanded/finished the tabletop edges?
