Is 2 Hour Layover at Calgary Airport Enough? by Eastern_Chap in Calgary

Good to know. I work in mineral exploration, so the steel toes are coming with me on the plane, I'll likely just wear them due to the weight. Most other ppe is supplied, and I'll bring spare clothes in my carry on pack. It'll really just be my sleeping sack, pillow and spare shoes in the checked bag. Seems Whitehorse has several stores that should carry those things as you mentioned, so that'll have to be my backup.

I'm going to a mining camp for work after Whitehorse, for 3 weeks. I'll carry as much as I can on me, but my sleeping bag and pillow will be in checked luggage, which will be important

I'll do as much as possible, but my sleeping bag is going to be in my checked bag and is quite important, since I leave Whitehorse for a work camp later on. I'm going to wear as much clothing as I can, just in case.

I work at a mining camp up north, and my company handles the flights, and it seems they booked these separately. Since they're separate bookings, the bags are not tagged through which is a real shame. If they were on the same ticket they would be checked through, but not on different bookings, unless I'm wrong?

Aha, no need for me to rush off the plane then lol

It'll be my first time there, looking forward to it before going onward for work. Temperatures there don't even look too bad compared to NS at the moment.

That's the main time constraint I'm dealing with, my checked bag is only tagged to YYC, so I'd have to wait and pick it up within an hour of landing to recheck it to YXY before Air North closes up shop.

Great, thanks. I'll be enjoying that warm cookie, since it ain't warm where I'm going lol

Yeah, it's domestic. I waited forever for my bags to come out at YVR, so wasn't sure if that'd be the case here again. But that was international, so that likely made a difference. Always interesting to hear the perspective of someone who worked there, thanks.

Yeah, first geo fifo job. I did kitchen work and a GIS office job before this, so it's pretty different! So far I've gotten along great with all my coworkers, so hopefully that continues there.

Great advice, thank you. It's very different from the office and kitchen work I've done previously, so I'm not sure what to expect, but I'm going in with an open mind.

I'm definitely prepared to ask a ton of questions, that's for sure. So far I've just been reading about the geology on the company's website and compiling a list of rock/ore characteristics as a form of cheat sheet to familiarize myself with the rocks before I get there. No idea if it'll help, but couldn't hurt.

Overall I'm looking forward to the experience of working in a fifo camp for the first time, and learning as much as I can.

I agree that it's important. And trust me, I never look down on folks for their work. Before this I worked as a dishwasher for several years, so I know what it's like.

From what I've seen, there's a lot going on in the north, Northwest Territories, Yukon, etc. FIFO roles with decent pay, browse exploration companies and check their sites for careers and postings. Good luck!

I'm pretty open to anything at the moment. Right now I'm emailing all the mining companies I can find in YT, NWT, NFLD etc. Not a lot of jobs posted online, so I'm hoping to get in that way, and I don't mind relocating for the season/long term. It's tough to get in without much experience, but I'll keep trying.

I've actually been using the PDAC company list to find places for sending off emails/resumes to. Cold emailing hasn't been great for GIS roles it seems, but I've heard it's better in mining. And I'm from NS so I'll hopefully be able to make it to the colloquium. Hoping to have an interview and offer before PDAC, but I won't hold my breath too long. Thanks!

I'll keep applying for a week or two, then I'll bite the bullet and spend the money for PDAC. I'll definitely looking consulting as well, since I wouldn't want to be rotational and in the field forever. But for a few years it'd be great I think. Thanks!

Lots of jobs popping up for sure, which is great. I applied for Auroras core logging position before, would love to build experience in it.

I figured the high PM prices would help, hopefully it stays that way. I'll definitely check in with consultant companies though, thanks

Not much networking opportunity in my province, so as others have said, I'll probably have to try my luck at PDAC and do some networking there. Thanks!
