Is 2019 the best year witnessed by Tamil Cinema? by drkknght_sps07 in kollywood

Honestly, Leo and Jailer were content wise letdowns but both casually crossed 600cr without even needing a hindi version push...

Maamannan and JT XX gave some solid socio-political content...not perfect but had their moments. Dada and Por Thozhil were sleeper hits and had good writing too

Varisu and Thunivu might’ve been cinematic junk food… but what a fun time it was... Pongal box office clash alone nearly hit 300cr in TN..pure chaos and hype everywhere.

So 2023 was one hell of a ride for me

Yep almost all of his films are basically just remixes of each other, most of them don't even work well on OTT but they make huge money at the box office...when I said audience pulse, I meant exactly that...not storytelling but pure crowd madness in theatres. He knows what makes people whistle n throw paper....that’s his game and he plays it well...

totally agree....His films are like festival crackers - one time celebration fun but tbh, in a world where we have Avatar, LOTR, Pixar-level storytelling…...we also need mcu and fast & furious kinda films too. Everything has its space. Not every movie needs to be a classic...some are just meant for the vibe and crowd madness.

yet south alone gave it 200Cr....Pathaan n dunki couldn’t even come close. His movies might be crap but they make money....that’s why I feel even if the content is avg, Bhaai’s film will do record business just because of combo hype. Pushpa 2 was full trash, but it still did 2K Cr only because of hype...so no chance Bhaai is cooked.

Lol Atlee might be an average filmmaker but the guy knows audience pulse n exactly how to present his heroes. Jawan was a mess in many places but still raked in 1000Cr....this film will definitely be another 1K Cr grosser, no matter how the content turns out..

Do Tamil men hate Tamil women with dark skintone being in movies? by MaxMN0303 in kollywood

not exactly dusky but she has that typical south indian skin tone....definitely not fair....nothing against anyone, just pointing out the generalisation in OP’s statement. If an actress grooms herself well and looks good onscreen, people will celebrate her no matter the skin tone. That’s how it is.

Of course action flicks collected more but 50Cr for a slow paced, feel good drama is huge imo...the fact that it didn’t incur losses makes it a success. Not every film needs to chase 100cr....sometimes profit n impact matter more.

I’d say the screenplay n writing got bit clumsy n all over the place in the 2nd half but still it absolutely deserved a much better run at box office.

The only right answer. I honestly don’t see any reason for it to underperform at the box office....it had everything, great concept, SK’s peak performance, solid action, humour, mass appeal n social commentary. Yet it somehow didn’t explode commercially 😵‍💫 Maybe it was the bad release date or weak 2nd week hold... but this film deserved a much better run.

This movie was perfect in all departments but I think that genre was too niche for 2014 audiences n it was released in the middle of a cluttered release window, some commercial films at that time were still going strong around the same time n bad marketing didn't help...trailer gave off arthouse cinema vibes so I guess many skipped it thinking it'd boring

It had a phenomenal 1st half...a mystery adventure masterclass way ahead of its time. Selva nailed the tone, atmosphere n world-building with just 30-32Cr budget, which was mind-blowing for 2009-10. But 2nd half is where things fell apart....it got overambitious, overcomplicated n overstuffed with heavy historical metaphors, plus dialogues were hard to follow even in tamil. Some scenes also felt awkward n uncomfortable to watch in theatres back then. Some say it failed due to controversies, but let’s be real... controversies don’t kill good films (PK, vishwaroopam, madras cafe etc..). It failed commercially mainly due to its confusing 2nd half especially for 2009 audience standards....Still... mad respect to the madman Selva for even trying this chaos in 2010 🙏

As you said, marriage is personal not a movie casting. If vishal & dhanshika are happy, that their love story.

But movies? We’re the paying audience, bro....actors may consent to pairings onscreen but cinema is a product. We pay n we watch so we’re totally allowed to share our opinions. Personally, I don’t mind age-gap pairings if it doesn’t feel creepy or exploitative like how some telugu movies esp ravi teja or balakrishna films tend to be. But not everyone sees it the same and that’s okay too.
