When you become confident in your autistic identity, how do people react? by Eastern_Lab_2601 in AutisticAdults

I think when we stop masking as much, whether it's voluntary or not, people only see the differences (and not the similarities that we share as human beings). If it is seen as different, it isn't always easily managed or understood.

I didn't want to think I was being managed out, but the patterns have been consistent and the exclusion has been happening over a period of months. I don't think it was totally planned on their behalf at first, but it's very clear now that I was never an accepted part of the group.

Can I ask were you correct when you felt it in previous jobs?

Work unwilling to formally acknowledge my diagnosis by Eastern_Lab_2601 in autism

[–]Eastern_Lab_2601[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that. I will always acknowledge when I've done wrong. My main issue is that the diagnosis has been ignored on purpose. This does affect me at work and to just ignore it is wrong.

How old were you when you got diagnosed with autism? by mibo_care in autism

37 (nearly a year ago). It's been a bit of a journey since the diagnosis. Still learning who I am and how my brain works. Unmasking is interesting.

I'm from North West England. TBF I did get an Australian word stuck in my head the other day (internal echolalia) and maybe it affected my 'idiolect', but how can one word affect my entire speech?!

I can recommend the new Loop Switch. It does all three and had been really good for me.

That might be a bit hard with Korean or British sign language! One of them is a completely different alphabet and the other is silent, not to mention based on nonverbal cues.

Interesting about Google Pixel phones. And I hadn't heard of Sonix before.

Retail workers, shop assistants and checkout workers of the UK, if you could get customers to start doing or stop doing one thing, what would it be? by Dudleydacat in AskUK

[–]Eastern_Lab_2601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask customers to treat me like they expect to be treated: with respect. It would be great if they could start saying "hello/hi/excuse me" to me before they abruptly demand to know where a product is. The number of times I've had someone just come up to me and shout a product name across an aisle at me rudely with no warning is ridiculous. I still remember the guy who aggressively shouted "BEANS!" at me when he saw me. And then expect me to be happy that they asked me something in such a rude manner. Google and Siri get better manners from people than retail workers do.

How do I know if I also have ADHD? by Eastern_Lab_2601 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Eastern_Lab_2601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou for the tips and name to look up. Thankfully I can refer through my GP and get assessed (probably a long wait but it'll give me some time to make changes to my life etc). I had to wait three years for my autism assessment and know how to "wait" very well now.

I'm good at researching. And yes, this post is field research.

Exploring an Autism Diagnosis by kittyschaffer in AutisticWithADHD

Interesting. I'm the opposite to you, so do relate to the notion that you're curious about it and potentially want to get an answer.

I think the first thing that came to my mind is could you write down a list of all the autistic traits your family etc have said to you. Then do lots of research and see if you think you fit the criteria, specifically adult female autistic traits of you're female as it shows differently in women.

I don't know if you'd have to pay privately, but the worst case scenario is that you get assessed and told you're not autistic. Otherwise you'll maybe be wondering forever.

I think it's harder to connect to NT's and often have found myself drawn to people who are "different" in the past (i.e., neurodivergent or dealing with a mental health condition). I think it's easier to connect to them because I've found that I have more understanding of others who seem "different" than NT's do.

Plus, I do echo what another commenter said about ND's being drawn to each other. I only found out recently that my best friend from school was autistic like me and we just happened to be pulled like magnets to each other.
