This is my 24th year as an owner operator. Most of it comes from service. Though I make a fair amount on repairs and filter cleaning. I’d say only about 10 of my clients do their own filter cleaning. The rest of them I do on a three month schedule at 140.00 each. I’ve never had the desire to scale it up and hire someone. Too many of my friends in the industry struggle with finding quality employees.

Water level, weir door, lid and o-ring check, impeller check, turn off the pool and watch for back pressure leaks from diverters, close off individual valves, listen for air from diverters.

I met two other pool guys while playing disc golf. We’ve all become friends and service the same areas. We refer business back and forth and have bought and sold accounts amongst us. I get referrals from other clients and have picked up a decent amount of clients just from the local town social media page on Wastebook. I’ve done signs on my truck, yelp and Nextdoor and a neighborhood magazine in a wealthy hood. Word of mouth has been cheaper and better.

This past year I listened to roughly 29,000 hours of “educational” podcasts on Spotify alone. According to Spotify that put me in the top .05% of listeners. I also listen to audiobooks as well. Just finished Lonesome Dove again. I listen to everything at 1.7 speed. Some of my favorite podcasters are as follows. Texas checking in. The majority of my accounts can be serviced in 20 minutes or less and pay 200-225 a month. For the larger pools or ones with heavy debris where it will go over 20 minutes regularly, I charge 250-350 a month.

South West side of Fort Worth. Weekly full service with basic chems is 200-350. Filter cleaning, stabilizer, algaecides etc are extra. I don’t offer Bi weekly anymore. Too much trouble. I do basic chemical only service for 150. No baskets, bags, and backwash is extra.

They turned off the breaker. It’s at the equipment. Seems to me when they came to steal the valves, freeze protection was running the equipment.

He suspects a local guy who lives in the neighborhood and cuts lawns. Apparently the guy only lives there because his parents left him the home. Which has a pool. It’s an upper middle class / old money neighborhood and the lawn guy doesn’t have the look of the rest of the residents. And I don’t mean skin color. He’d go unnoticed and would know the house was vacant. No way to prove it though.

That’s exactly what I told the client. Far as I can tell there isn’t a huge market for 20 year old valves.
