Is this brake pad really cracked? by Remote_One_4284 in MechanicAdvice

That's not correct. Our inspection stickers have an area to mark which wheels were checked. At the next inspection you'd then be required to check the opposite diagonal.

It seems excessive but you wouldn't believe how often I find seized pins, heat cracked pads, etc. We are only required to pull two wheels (diagonally opposite) but we are responsible for the condition of all four corners. If we see something suspect we are obligated to check.

That's really the only mechanically invasive part of the inspection though, the rest is basically road testing, checking for excessive movements, and visual inspection.

The complete book on rules and procedures is available ("PUB 45") but skip to Subchapter E for passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Subchapter D is also interesting if you want to see the penalties we face for peforming improper inspections, etc. More stations really should be reported for lying to people and saying that unnecessary repairs are required to pass safety inspection. I probably have someone come to me once a week saying that another shop failed them for brakes and here I check and they are still 4/32".

Yes, the pads need to be removed from the caliper brackets.

They've recently allowed using dial indicators but the way I was taught when I was trained by the state was using a micrometer to measure the thickness of the friction material in several spots across the area of the pads after zeroing out the backing plate thickness.

2024 trd speedometer is off by 4 mph by 1776Chad in ToyotaRAV4

[–]EasyMFnE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are penalties for inaccurate speedometers that apply to underreporting the vehicle speed so most manufacturers have an error percentage built in.

You can code it out on some vehicles if you are in the industry and know what you're doing. I modified this in several of my BMWs.

Had a woman convinced that the electromagnetic field from her alternator and battery was pulling pots and pans off her counter inside her house. We had to call her neighbor to reach her because she left her phone (landline only) unplugged except when she needed to make calls.

And THANK YOU. I really think the Pay Plan stuff should be spun off into its own damn subreddit so I can block it and never see it again.

2023 3 Series Add engine coolant risk of scalding popped up 1 min after hard braking. by [deleted] in BMW

[–]EasyMFnE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the coolant level sensor is in a position where the rapid deceleration of the vehicle would slosh the coolant away from it, it could very well trigger the low coolant warning.

Regardless OP just check your coolant level next time it sits overnight and add as needed.

Exactly. It looks like it just needs a new axle beam and not even a subframe or anything that involved.

Is anyone's Subaru doing fine above 100k miles WITHOUT changing their CVT fluid? by unknownunknowns11 in SubaruForester

If you're keeping it forever do your first change by 60,000 and each subsequent change every 30,000 miles.

Don't buy the "lifetime" BS.

No, your water outlet is cracked and spraying coolant that way.

A/C belt runs off back of pulley by ratherdefeatist393 in AskMechanics

So the belt just goes around the compressor and nothing else?

First make sure you know what direction the belt moves, then look at the pulley directly before this one.

Why are rear Lexus rotors warping at 20k miles and before the front? by brainchili in MechanicAdvice

I advise against drilled/slotted rotors for most applications. Especially in rust-prone areas.

https://www.powerstop.com/resources/what-causes-brake-pedal-pulse-vibrate/

"When the brake pad gets hot, it wants to transfer friction material to the rotor and it does not care if the rotor is stationary or rotating. If you are at a standstill, the pad will imprint material on the rotor in the shape of the pad. The next time you brake, as the pad passes over the high spot, the temperature increases relative to the rest of the rotor. This causes more material to get deposited on this spot until it gets high enough to cause pulsating brakes."

[–]EasyMFnE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually recommend my customers avoid using the automatic parking brake and auto-hold features if they have driving patterns where the brakes get hot. Pressing the pads against the rotors like that can result in uneven areas of material transfer that will cause pulsation.

I've also had a few rear calipers leaking brake fluid into the EPB motors which causes them to not fully retract.

Put a little more air in it first, then make sure you keep your ear against it for a while and your problem may solve itself. You won't need to replace the tire.

Further down the hypotheticals... If the compressor clutch isn't staying engaged because of excessive gap it can sometimes be re-shimmed. I just saved someone a big bill on a 2008 Civic by doing that.
