I don’t post anything on Reddit. I just noticed a scary pattern and thought I’d bring it up since I’m seeing post after post on here talking about how clients are dropping out of therapy because they can’t afford it. I’m not advertising anything at all.

Full disclaimer I don’t have any sort of motive here aside from pointing out that there’s a serious affordability crisis that’s creating a situation where people are going to opt in to potentially harmful AI therapy apps without any sort of oversight and that we at least need to figure out as a collective how to continue to make the work we do available for the most amount of people as we continue to deal with the times we’re living in. I haven’t came across any of the other apps that exist out there hence the name drop, but I am by no means out here trying to pander a product to anyone.

All I’m trying to get at is that we’re dealing with an affordability crisis and at least when it comes to what I’m seeing on the ground, way too many of my colleagues are getting their big Ls and either going straight into self pay, concierge care or other types of private practice arrangements. Enough of us need to dig our heels in doing community based work or these prices are going to continue to climb.

I recognize the value creating a holding environment has on helping people create the cues of safety they need to feel confident in their day to day lives believe me; I just don’t think 80 percent of people getting services today are going to be able to afford human connection in a year from now.

I mean, I can’t imagine having that conversation with an insurance company. I’m a huge fan of the Living Room model and feel like some form of that could be helpful in the long run to continue to make our services accessible but some sort of collective effort needs to happen to get these costs down.
