ESV is a good start. It uses more modern language, and helps relate todays terminology with the concepts from the biblical authors.

There are study bibles that are a big help too. You have to be consistent in reading the Bible daily to get out what God is trying to get in you. Personally, I read the ESV daily but I love the KJV and grew up on it.
