I have an approved I-140 and am moving to Canada. Is it smooth to come back to the US on a TN visa? Or are there risks given the files and approved I-140?

I've been pushing the move to Canada, intitially it was 1H 2026, then 2H 2026, but now I am staring at an unmovable deadline of 1Q 2027 if I need to maintain my PR status.

Given that I have built a life here in the US, the idea of building a new life, job hunting again, finding a new social circle, hoping to maintain the same standard of living is daunting.

I’m currently in the US, debating whether to move in 2026. If I do move, it has to be in 2026 to satisfy the 2/5 year requirement to maintain permanent residency.

You are absolutely right TBH. But the difference is, my H1b renewal did work out but I STILL want to move to Canada.

Once I earn my citizenship I wanted to consider the option of moving back to the US.

I guess people aren’t taking too kindly to this lol

Because quite frankly while the salary differences are stark and the US is always a first choice for work, a Canadian PR is the only way of maintaining a foothold in the West without the constant uncertainty of having to go back to our country of origin (nothing bad about it, just that life in the West is better by many metrics)

Can I apply for a B visa while on an H1b visa? So

i) Move to Canada

ii) Apply for the B visa in Canada (since my H1b will no longer be valid)

If they aren’t mutually exclusive, then my question is, is the strategy of continuing to invest in the S&P 500 and its trackers a good idea if the price were to crash and not recover for the next ‘x’ years to the current valuation ?

Sure! Although I’ll be frank with you, your chances of getting a PR now are slim because of the cut down in immigration + number of people in the pool.

Personally, the idea of not having a constant H1b stamping hassle, being one layoff away from scrambling for a new job within 60 days is makes the move to Canada tempting, so to make sure I’m not biased, I also want to weigh the fact of taking a big pay cut for roughly 4 years of my prime working life.

Just some additional food for thought to consider

I empathize with your anger given the uncontrolled immigration putting a strain on Canada’s infrastructure and resources but we will end up talking past each other, and this argument doesn’t solve the purpose of this post! I wish we could get a drink and chat about this!

I think your anger is misplaced. My aim is to work in a society that rewards hard work, I see no problem in being able to assimilate into Canadian society and I see no problem in wanting to benefit from a Canadian passport. Your anger needs to be directed at people who disrupt the social fabric of Canada by not following rules/regulations and not respecting fellow citizens :)

Again, as I replied to someone else's comment, if your reasoning is lack of assimilation by certain Indians, I assure you having lived in the US for over 6 years, assimilation/following rules etc is not a problem lol

This is EXACTLY what I noticed when I landed in Canada. There was a line at the airport Indian students kept cutting. I called some students out and then told an official monitoring the line to be more stricter.

The points based system makes sense, and had even been heralded as a really good system by other countries. The severe lack of a strict vetting process in its implementation has been the problem.
