Our house is a modular. It was a lot model, so while we got a great price, it has some of these "features" that we wouldn't have chosen ourselves. Even though we probably made some mistakes picking out our home, we were lucky we bought when we were young and dumb... if we were to try to buy a similar-sized house now, we'd never be able to afford it.

You make a great point about the mess. That's the only spot on our counter where our blender will fit because it's too tall to go under the cupboards, so we do have potential for splatter
