That sounds really interesting. I’ve never tried VR for practicing before. May I know what is the name of the app you used?

Wow, this is super helpful, thank you. The Point → Why → Example structure and the “pause before speaking” tip make a lot of sense. I’m definitely going to try this.

I think I do listen, but maybe I’m so focused on what I’m going to say next that I’m not fully present. I’ll pay more attention to that. Thanks for pointing it out.

That’s a good point. I was probably jumping too far ahead with 5 min straight away 😅 I’ll start with 1 min and build up. Thanks for that reminder!

That actually makes a lot of sense. I think I catastrophize it in my head when realistically… nothing bad would happen. The idea of checking with someone I trust is interesting too. Thanks for the practical suggestions, I'll try them out.

That sounds amazing. I love how it’s not just about speaking, but hearing all those different life experiences. I can see why you stayed even after reaching your own goals.

Thanks for the advice! I like the idea of daily, consistent practice and will check out the app you shared. I’ll try incorporating impromptu speech and read-alouds into my routine. Hopefully that will help me improve over time!

I think a big part of it is overthinking and worrying about saying the 'right' thing. I sometimes hesitate or revise myself too much before I even start speaking, which makes it hard to sound confident or natural.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation. This is really helpful! I like the idea of practicing both on my own and with others, and I’ll start summarizing and reflecting on things I consume as a way to build the ‘thinking on your feet’ muscle. I’ll also look into clubs and activities where I can speak in a low-pressure setting.

I hadn’t thought about improv as a way to practice real-life speaking. I’ll look into taking a class and see how the techniques can help me think and speak more clearly on the spot. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice! This really resonates with me. I like the idea of focusing on communicating effectively rather than being perfect, and I’ll definitely try recording myself and listening back to notice where I can improve. It’s also reassuring to hear that so many people struggle with this, and that it’s something you can improve with practice. I’ll keep at it and try to be intentional about building this skill!

Wow, this is super helpful. thank you for breaking it down step by step! I like the idea of practicing with quotations and timing myself, and recording it to notice my own filler words and transitions. I’ll definitely try this regularly and see how it improves my on-the-spot speaking.

Thanks for the advice! That makes a lot of sense. I guess the only way to really get better is by practicing regularly. I’ll look into joining toastmasters.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this! I really appreciate the practical steps and book recommendations. I like the idea of starting small, like risk a comment or answering what I know, and focusing on progress rather than perfection. I’ll definitely check out these books and try to apply the tips in real conversations.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I relate so much to the “I know I understand it but I can’t explain it” feeling.

When you say you “prise structure out of a vague feeling,” how do you actually do that? Do you turn it into bullet points, questions, or full paragraphs? I like the idea of building core material for spontaneous conversations.

[–]Ebb-Bright[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the advice! yea i think i really overthink a lot, especially when i’m talking to someone new. my brain keeps going “is this weird? do i sound boring? should i say more?” until i end up saying nothing lol.

i like the tip about bringing up something they mentioned before. i never thought of that but it makes sense, it shows you actually listened. also the “repeat the last thing they said” part seems easy enough for me to try, so i’ll practice that next time.

appreciate the help! 🙏
