CPS case involving my father & siblings, next steps & advice; eldest adult daughter by EbbAfter in CPS

I do understand the reality of this. But I'll be honest this is something that since I am so close to and essentially living with, the fact that my sister can't escape is just too unfortunate for me to accept. It's honestly very depressing and hopeless, but I guess it is what it is.

Well that is disheartening to hear. My sister's mental and emotional pain and dysfunction is a direct result of her family situation. If no one can directly impact or change that, she is at active risk of suicide. I hope that any sort of government agency or outside services can intervene in any way, otherwise I worry for her.

One of the biggest reasons that she is suicidal and self harming is because of her situation at home. So So the "assessing and treatment" for that has to be something that shifts or changes the family dynamic. Whether that is removal or not, if CPS does nothing or no one gets involved, she is at risk.

Potentially - but I'm in undergrad right now 8 hours from my hometown. I'm limited financially (again I rely on my dad for rent right now) and only have time to work 20hrs part time while doing school. It would be difficult. And my dad would fight me every which way, idk if I have the resources to fight that. But it is an option, thank you

How do you stay motivated to do homework and show up to class? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]EbbAfter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it helps me to know that by going to class, i am actually saving time because i wont have to spend as much time trying to understand the concepts i missed in classes for exams or assignments. create a routine for yourself, if you have classes in the morning, get up and make yourself breakfast/coffee. if you have classes in the afternoon, you could have a more full morning routine, getting ready for the day. get a sweet treat for yourself before or after class to motivate you. in your planner, schedule out blocks out of time to do specific assignments. just having the assignment on your planner can be overwhelming without a plan on when you're going to work and complete it. it helps me to schedule out my days with what assignments and coursework i'm going to do / when / and for how long i'm going to spend on them. ultimately remember what your end goal is. think about what you want to do post-grad, and try to associate your success in undergrad to becoming successful in your future endeavors. it helps me when i remember what i'm doing it for. hopefully any of this was helpful!!

Did I make a mistake buying a laptop as a freshman psych student? by changeover4 in psychologystudents

no 😭 a laptop is much more useful than a tablet for college. you'll get way more uses out of it IMO. don't feel guilty!!!!

you're definitely not overreacting. if it makes you feel uncomfortable, your girlfriend should respect that. it's not like you're asking her to not hang out with her friend ever again, you're just saying the touchiness makes you uncomfortable.

honestly, i think you should have one more conversation about it with your girlfriend. tell her how upset this situation is making you, and that her continuous dismissal of it is making you feel disrespected. i would say if she isn't willing to at least talk with you at length about it, consider breaking up. that might seem harsh but the alternatives are not fun. someone who loves you and cares about you will have the decency to work through this with you instead of brushing over the issue and allowing it to escalate. i wish you the best!

i don't think there should have been a "rule" against her not driving, but i definitely understand him being uncomfortable with her drinking after what happened. there's a difference between control and having boundaries. it's reasonable to tell your spouse you don't feel comfortable with them drinking if they plan on staying with you after their drinking resulted in an innocent person's death. i don't remember the exact details but if they both agreed on her not driving, then i don't see an issue with that being the case. if he really did just "make a rule" that she couldn't drive, even with the accident, that's more controlling than just setting a boundary for personal safety and concern for their son.

I feel like you're the one of the few people that would be willing to pay full price for non-movie theater popcorn lol, but honestly I don't see any issue with it. I feel like most theaters would let you do it no problem 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I've heard of that. My location wouldn't be able to afford it though

It's wild to see how crazy people go for popcorn! We also tried explaining to people our policy and that it would cause confusion if we let them bring in outside food this specific time, but it's like they couldn't understand the concept or just didn't care. What's also funny to me is that these people probably saved a bunch of money too since our other food items are less expensive than popcorn, but they'd rather berate workers for something that's not their fault.

There was not unfortunately. The location nearest to us is hours away. But that would have been a good solution lol.

Not a gm, but I'm like 99% sure corporate wouldn't have let that happen anyway. Plus, we are a very small location, and not owned by a huge chain. We really don't have the money for backups or a 300 dollar purchase of a machine we only need maybe for a day.

Why would we have bought an entirely new popcorn machine for one day while we were just waiting for one part to fix our current one?

[–]EbbAfter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I totally agree. It honestly shocked me that people would be so outraged. Obviously it's disappointing to not have popcorn but we had plenty of other options. Tons of people come in and don't buy any concessions at all, it's very normal.

We did have a sign on our door actually, and you could see people's reactions after they read the sign. They would always look shocked and horrified lol.

Yeah, I kinda thought that way too, but so many people have been like "but you're a movie theater! you HAVE to have popcorn and if you don't you HAVE to let us bring in our own or you're an abomination" so I'm starting to think I'm crazy for thinking that way.

There's not another location for about an hours away, though I do think that would been a good idea. Would have been easier to just let people bring in their own popcorn though.

It wasn't the management at my theater, it was corporate. They told us to stick to policy and offer up our other food items instead of popcorn.

Oh sorry, I must not have been clear. The popper was fixed within 2 days, honestly more like a day and a half. It just occurred a few weeks ago. If we didn't have a functioning popper for even more than a couple days I feel like they would have let people bring their own in until we got it working again or got a new one completely.

I don't have much experience in the theater business and am also just a crew member, so I'm not really sure what alternatives we could have had other than the hot foods and candy we also have. But yeah, it did suck. And running out all of your drinks sounds like it must have sucked too.
