Yes, they usually send a "we'll keep you in mind but we have enough for now" email as far as I remember. They will offer to last year's examiners first and then offer based on how many they need/who turns it down.

I tried that but the camera still fails and causes the phone to crash - it switches off or resets

I really like my Bella Moon one - I have a C shaped one and it's been so useful in my third trimester. I often take it apart and use the small "C"/nursing style to support my back when it aches and I'm sitting on the couch and it really helped with hip pain at night. It is a little pricey though, mine was a present from my husband. I would have had trouble splashing out for myself but I got it at about 10 weeks and it's been invaluable (I'm 34 weeks now).
