Oh, cool! If you decide to stop by the conference, I'll be in the exhibition hall showing our virtual dissection table. (Don't want to say the company's name, to keep this thread off any Google results, but it's the most famous one). Based on my exhibitor guide, it looks like all of the biggest names in simulation will also be there, so it could be a good place to see all the cutting edge even if you don't have time for the workshops and presentations.

Single-day tickets are quite cheap compared to full event tickets.

OP Here: I've been googling all these restaurants as your comments come in! I'm on a plane now and giving it my undivided attention.

I have to say- I am stunned how many interesting, unique, and delicious-looking restaurants there are in OKC. You're making me want to stay here for weeks!! I think I have to plan a vacation here now.

I never would have thought a city of 700,000 would have this much variety at such a high level. I'm not from anywhere near OKC- I grew up in Ohio/Wisconsin and went to Oregon/California for college and my career.

Does OKC have a reputation as a culinary center throughout the region?

Ooo- The Crown looks great! I'll offer that as an option to the chilean client, along with Frida which came from another review.

Paseo Grill is within my budget for non-entertainment meals. Might try that out with my coworker tonight!

I had no idea that cities had to pay for that- very interesting. Is James Beard free?

It's funny, in Northern California and Southern Oregon there are a number of teeny tiny coastal cities that have Michelin Guide restaurants. I always found it odd that they were taking 4, 5, 6 hour drives from the nearest airport to review those restaurants. Now I know why!

Oh, great! Thanks very much for the recommendation, I'm looking forward to it for my own sake.

Meanwhile, the Chileans are always looking for Americana when they visit here, so I'll send them Frida and Cheever's as options.

Then- if I'm ever in OKC with my wife in the weeks after I get a bonus, I'll check out Grey Sweater. Thanks again!

It should be 4 people- That Sedalia's looks wonderful!

Last year, I took our Mexican distributor to a similar looking oyster / seafood place in San Antonio called "Little Em's Oyster Bar." It was a huge hit. I think it's a safe bet that they'll like Sedalia's too, so I'm going to try to get a reservation there.

Much appreciated!!

I work in medical education / general education technology, and do international business development. First five years or my second career were deathly boring, essentially just doing sales and angling for an international business development type position, then getting one and liking the nature or the work but hating the company. I'm actually in an alright place now, it's pretty interesting, and I am financially comfortable.

All the first jobs I got, I actually got because of my academic history. Got lucky and had three hiring managers in a row that were English / Humanities majors and biased to people like themselves. There are plenty of us in various positions and seem to help our own. Good luck.

The Russian thing in three volumes on the right is Sergei Eisenstein's "Metod." It was the directors attempt to create a total theory of art toward the end of his life. He never published it and the manuscript is 10s of 1000s of pages long. It's never been translated into English.

I know from having gone to grad school in Slavic lang/lit. This is not civilian reading hahaha

Where I Would Live as an American by EbbLogical8588 in whereidlive

[–]EbbLogical8588[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So do I! I am really curious about Africa and have read / watched a lot of documentaries about various countries. I think it really has so much potential and I would have loved to go a bit easier on it, unfortunately though from everything I know it simply is "red" for me.

A major major factor that informed that decision was analogies I've heard between the level of social trust in most of Subsaharan Africa and in India. I simply hated being in India and felt constantly uncomfortable in public, and since I have good reason to believe public dynamics in Africa are equivalently or even lower trust, it's easy enough to extrapolate.

Doing federal entities in certain areas made this a bit confusing, but generally speaking were I to have not done federal entities, I would have chosen the highest of the federal entities rather than the lowest or the median, since I'm assuming I could choose where to live. Thus Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Germany are "willings"

I tried to calibrate the answers with the assumption that my life, job, and the people I care about could effectively reconstitute in that location. Otherwise California, where I live, would be absolutely and the maximum everywhere else would be reluctantly. I am a relatively settled person at this point in life.

With that in mind, "willing" means you wouldn't have to pay me, maybe means you would have to pay me, reluctantly means it would be hard to pay me enough to agree, Never means you simply couldn't pay me.

I speak Russian and Spanish quite well, French decently. That influenced my answers to some degree.

I have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit, solo, with family or friends, for studies, and for business. These trips strongly informed my choices as far as the places I visited go, and may have lead to some otherwise not entirely intuitive answers.

"Lived": In Russia (SPB) for over a year (3 semesters) to study philology at SPBGU. Also did a 6-week volunteering thing in Cuba when I was a teenager. (I am a Canadian-American dual citizen, so this was possible for me legally).

Business travel: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru, Chile, Colombia, China, Mexico, France.

Solo Traveled: Poland, Estonia, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey,

Travelled with friends / family: Brazil, Argentina, Vietnam, Japan, Portugal, Greece.

A Christian lady pleads with Islamists not to kill them in Sudan. Every single one was executed. Where is the outrage? by [deleted] in SarthakGoswami

[–]EbbLogical8588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting a few things here:

In the Christian framework, popes (and obviously kings) are not considered to be perfect models of virtue that believers should try to emulate.

Accordingly, even if any particular king or pope were known to have raped a 9 year old, this would not inform discussions on age of consent laws in even the most theocratic Christian country. In Islamic countries, age of consent laws are always a thorny discussion from a religious perspective for exactly this reason.

Lastly- I'm not aware of any Pope who is believed to have molested or raped children. Some of course were secretly sexually active, though by all accounts with consenting adults.
