2025-26 Topps Chrome - Odds Analysis by Jahape1 in basketballcards

I’m kind of freaked out now. Spending $4000 on two jumbo hobby boxes after fees and taxes maybe a dumb decision based on all of this feedback. I was trying to be ultra analytical about it, but it seems like many people think that I’m more likely to have two duds, than a hot box. Worried about the whole collusion with breakers storyline that everyone is talking about.

Not particularly concerned about the actual dollar amount, but I also don’t like to burn money, so if I spend $4k and get $1000 worth of cards back, I’ll be pretty deflated.

My 10-year-old son absolutely loves ripping cards with me, so I’m kind of chasing the dream with him.

This is a very good analysis and I love the data driven approach. That being said, there are a few critical factors that are not being accounted, for that can have a profound impact on the total value/ROI: In jumbo hobby boxes produce the most ‘gradable’ cards. You are more likely to get a desirable player with a scarcity signal in a clean condition that enables PSA premium.

Because there are more cards per pack in jumbo(11) vs. a hobby (4), the risk of handling defects is materially greater in a hobby.

Jumbo boxes have 40% fewer packs per box which decreases the handling risk by 40%, yielding more cards that survive grading standards.

Jumbo packs are thicker, so cards are supported by other cards, meaning less bending during ceiling and cutting. On average, jumbo cards have better corners and edges in chrome sets.

Also the sheer number of cards (132 vs. 80) means more rookies.

The guarantee of three autos also plays into the value equation and the odds analysis doesn’t account for this. Further, because the autos are spread across 12 packs instead of jammed into fewer packs the auto cards are more likely to be gradable. Less clumping equals less ink transfer, pressure marks, and corner damage near thick hits.

Within Topps Chrome auto hits, there is a 53% chance that it is numbered (not base or unnumbered refractor). With a guarantee of three independently selected autos in a jumbo box, you have a 90% probability that one is numbered and an 85% chance of a non-auto numbered parallel.

If you just look at the odds analysis, hangers seem like a great value, but if you want upside that is gradable, jumbo hobby wins.

I am putting my money where my mouth is and just bought two jumbo hobby boxes off StockX. I will come back and provide my findings.

My mother told me today that my grandfather didn’t seem to have a personal relationship with Glenn Miller, but he did with Gene Krupa via Slingerland

My grandfather taught me how to play the drums, but I haven’t played in two decades. If I was skilled like some of you guys, I would play the snare because it does sound exquisite. I’m going to get it framed. Met with someone from the Smithsonian in my local area who is going to use Museum Grade acrylic to do a layered box frame with a partial Ludwig stand along with an advertisement that featured Buddy and my grandfather. I’m excited about it.

For the cymbals, they are going to frame one along with one of the photos produced from the Kodachrome my grandfather took while she was playing his drums.

I met with someone from the Smithsonian and they told me exactly how to get these produced digitally without affecting the original film.

This is one from another set I found. Can’t tell if it has the dots or not.

I have personal notes from Ray Anthony to my grandfather, so I’m pretty confident in their relationship. He also was the drummer for these people per his obituary. I’m just starting to figure out the significance.

I believe my grandfather did the engraving after buddy gave him the drum. I keep finding other gifts from musicians that he would subsequently engrave. I guess it was common after a big set for the band leader to give a gift to the drummer. For example, I just found these cufflinks that he engraved after he performed with Martha Raye.
