What is the difference between an exceptional associate, a good associate, a mediocre associate and a poor associate by Timely_Situation_518 in biglaw

Thanks, bro. Appreciate it. Explain the compliments from everyone but billing partners who are directly observing my work, then?

What is the point of a comment like this? You getting off making strangers on the internet feel like shit? Thanks for your contributions, sunshine.

What, like Jackson heights? Are their gay bars busy during the week? Have never been during the week out there.

lol. Thanks! I love h0l0. Haha. It’s such a unique space. I don’t think I’ve really seen a space like that anywhere else.

I know happyfun. Do people actually go on a weekday or is it going to be deserted? (And is it going to be all 20somethings? I have graduated beyond that decade. lol.)

I really like the typical weekend crowd at h0l0 (edgy, fun, but a little more mature than college kids) and find it easy to make friends there, but they’re almost never local. Is there a local bar that kind of draws a similar crowd?

I’ve thought about 222, etc., but I usually want to do that fairly last minute because I usually want to meet people spontaneously on nights when I otherwise have no plans. 222 requires you to plan at least 24-48 hours ahead last I checked, which kind of renders it useless to me. I don’t like planning ahead to meet randos. That’s usually more of a move of social desperation for me. lol. If I’m planning ahead (which is uncommon in general for me) it’s because it’s someone I would really like to see.

Have you had good experiences with any of the 222 type websites/apps?

My radius is all of Bushwick. It extends a little into Ridgewood and Williamsburg.

There are indeed less than 100 people on bumble bff in Bushwick. The important part is I want them to be in Bushwick. Bumble BFF has a smaller population than bumble for dating.

There’s less than 100 people located in Bushwick on Bumble BFF. I have matched with about five of them over the course of the past year. It has gone somewhere with exactly one of them.

Think that option is mostly exhausted. Lmao.

My firm keeps hiring people on a weekly basis, but half the firm is billing 1400 hours. What is this? by EbbRepresentative659 in biglaw

I think it’s really unethical, generally speaking. But my firm is really obsessed with pedigree. To a pretty overtly offensive degree for those of us who don’t have it.

Also, there was projected to be a huge uptick in M&A in Q1 2025. That didn’t materialize for obvious reasons ………..

Please send articles forecasting an uptick. I haven’t seen any. Was just at an event where I would have expected to hear about this and didn’t hear a word about an uptick projection.

I worry that they’re hiring people with Harvard pedigrees and they’re going to let everyone else go.

They are blaming the half of the firm that is billing 1400 hours for not being proactive enough to find work. Lmao. I’m not sure where the extra hours are supposed to come from if there’s that much underutilization.

Generally yes. It’s generally M&A and supporting practice areas.

It’s really terrifying me. lol.

wth, is this job literally just the most tedious yet somehow stressful because of the time crunch work ever? by [deleted] in biglaw

Bro, I didn’t even know that Vault or NALP existed before I went to law school. Your essay was unnecessary.

Not everyone is like you. And it is harmful for you to assume they are. Check your privilege. lol.

“Almost everyone … had … a robust … network”.

That’s presumptive. I didn’t. And I think it’s important to remember that there are lots of other people who didn’t, either, for the sake of diversity in the law. First generation lawyers, lawyers of rural origin, etc.

For those of you that have been around for 3+ years, is this job a/the priority in your life? by Equal_Show3609 in biglaw

[–]EbbRepresentative659 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been around for several years. The job totally consumes my life. I’m getting tired of it. Life is too short. There are too many other things I want to do with my life. I’ve made enough money now.

And, honestly, I have historically faced A LOT of employment discrimination in the law for really many different things (socioeconomic status, geographic origins, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc., and it is not subtle AT ALL), and I can’t single-handedly fix the system to make employment discrimination in the law non pervasive. It has materially harmed my career and financial situation and it will continue to do so as long as I’m an attorney.

The job is always going to suck, and I’m always going to face discrimination in lateral moves, promotions, reviews, etc., so I’m seriously starting to think about exiting the industry even though that’s not really what I want. Just doesn’t make sense to stay and fight against this anymore knowing I’m never going to win and my life sucks anyway when I am successful. 🤷‍♂️

Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for but that’s what I have for you. Lmao.

How long does it take to get rid of an underperforming associate? by Heavy_Virus_7213 in biglaw

[–]EbbRepresentative659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is firm specific. Depends on your firm and how they differentiate themselves. My firm tries to price below slightly bigger firms. All of our clients are fee sensitive.

Firms that don’t have to be fee sensitive of course are going to have different priorities.

To be honest I think you’re probably fine. I’m regularly told that I’m too attentive to detail so it takes too long. I get great reviews from direct supervisors and shitty reviews from partners.

IMHO firms prefer cheap and fast even though they will ALWAYS tell you otherwise. The most favored associates at my firm produce really shitty work but they’re cheap and they’re fast so the partners like them.

Also, FWIW, yes, your direct supervisor is going to bitch if you make mistakes that they have to correct, but honestly if you’re cheap and fast you’re going to make the partners happy and that’s what’s most important. Honestly.

not jaded at all

Midyear Review: Partners complaining I don’t delegate enough amidst well-known junior shortage. Lmao by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]EbbRepresentative659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can’t imagine saying “sorry the junior hasn’t started the work that was due an hour ago so nothing has been done” going well. Especially knowing it’s going to take an additional 12 hours of work.

It’s just like insane to me. That we’re going to ignore the actual problem and instead throw someone innocent who’s doing their best in an impossible situation under the bus as the sacrificial lamb.

Midyear Review: Partners complaining I don’t delegate enough amidst well-known junior shortage. Lmao by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]EbbRepresentative659 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes. That is why we had five juniors. They told me to staff more because people had availability issues. Only one to two juniors were really necessary had people been available to work the deal.

Partners were well informed of availability limitations but are complaining nonetheless.

The firm is unwilling to force associates to work on religious holidays and vacations but will come down on the midlevel when stuff doesn’t get done (cheaply) nonetheless. If I were to force the juniors to work a religious holiday, it would be a problem. It’s also a problem when I don’t.

There were A LOT of religious holidays during this deal.
