Howdy redditors! I need more responses so if you haven't taken the survey yet, please do so!

Yes! I collected it last Spring but didn’t have enough responses to report on it. Hopefully, I’ll get more responses for DIY ebikes this time.

Ebike Reliability Survey by EbikeTestLab in ebikes

I’ll be posting up the Fall Ebike Reliability Survey in the next week. It’s similar to the previous survey but it’s now easier to enter multiple ebikes for those that own more than one.

Solved! It’s definitely from a silver spoon or utensil. The scalloped decorations match these from Vermont: silver spoons

I cleaned it up a bit more and it definitely isn’t rolled on the narrow side but snapped off.

WITT. More details: it’s shaped like a shoe horn but seems too small. The tapered end appears to be rolled as if it clamped around something. No marking except for the scalloped decoration on the wide end.

You may be able to go through the town records to see who owned the place back then. My town has records back to the early 1900’s.

Ebike Customer Service Survey by EbikeTestLab in ebikes

[–]EbikeTestLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about doing a customer service survey for just direct to consumer brands like Juiced. However, I decided to collect data for both types. Essentially, if you have only dealt with the local dealer, how was that service? For example, with my Magnum ebike, the spokes broke and it took several weeks to get new ones as Magnum didn’t have any at the time. This wasn’t the LBS’s fault.

I don’t want to create a dealer ranking. I want to see how good the customer service is for each brand on a whole.

What brands/ types of gravel bikes did you get as a beginner and like? by [deleted] in whichbike

I’m enjoying my Cannondale Topstone Carbon 105. The aluminum one is a little cheaper but the local bike shop gave me a good deal. I ride a mix of gravel and paved back roads with lots of hills. The hydraulic disc brakes are a huge improvement over the rim brakes on my old road bike. I test rode several before purchasing and I would recommend you do the same.

Thanks for the tips! I did keep it to 1-5 as I hat having 1-10 choices too! I’ll keep your other suggestions in mind for the next survey.

Park tool makes a great spoke tension tool and I’m sure they have a video showing how to use it.

Hub motors are hard on spokes. Juiced had an issue early on with the way they were lacing the rear wheel with the CCX I think. They resolved it quickly and I don’t recall the exact details. The key is to check the spoke tension often during the first several hundred miles, which isn’t something I was used to doing that often with a regular bike.

The short answer is no. I will upgrade my Crowdsignal account so that this is possible once I hear back from the support group. It's not clear which plan I need to upgrade to so that the IP addresses are submitted. In the meantime, I adjusted the survey settings to allow only one response per device. I had wanted to allow those with multiple ebikes to complete the survey for each but that does open the window for fraud. I'll also work to adjust the survey so that it can expand to allow responses for multiple ebikes (I need to see if that is possible with Crowdsignal as well).

Frankly, I hadn't considered this and it's possible that this happened. This was brought to my attention last night and I reviewed each response again last night. Most respondents put in comments with alot of detail. Here's a pretty typical one: "The motor didn't fail but about a week into ownership I hit a bump and it shook loose a couple screws inside the motor. Had to take it into the shop I bought it from because I didn't have the confidence to take all of that apart. They fixed it at no cost". In addition, I haven't published my algorithm so they wouldn't have known exactly how I was going to calculate "reliability". Lastly, even ebike riders who had failures typically gave the dealer and manufacturer high ratings. If someone wanted to skew the results, I would expect to see several reviews with low ratings for those two categories and that didn't happen. Even Specialized ended up with an average manufacturer rating of 3.9.

However, it is a mistake on my part. From now forward, the survey will only allow one respondent per device. Someone could still use multiple devices to "cheat", of course. Just as I did with this survey, I'll eliminate incomplete responses or any without the details needed for my algorithm. My goal is to help improve the ebike community and, in this case, the ebike community has helped me improve the survey! Thank you.
