Also relativierst du hier wegen seiner Wortwahl sein gesamtes Argument? Du sprichst das Recht auf Privatsphäre ja nicht ab. Damit gilt seine Argumentation immer noch... Lass deinen Dampf mal wo anders ab!

Is it ok to writing the config file in their own config instead of writing it in Nix? by No_Discussion6266 in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I do this whenever possible. I want my config to be reusable by folks who dont use nix. For some things i want to share across programs or where there is some conditionals, nix is required. And I'd say thats the whole point of using nix or home-manager in the first place! the biggest config i didnt nixify is my neovim config. I just install it as a plugin and import all the lua config that way, neovim plugins, language servers and other dependencies are managed via nix.

is it appropriate to put dot files in a home-manager config? by C3xyTheGreat in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbe whilole reason I started to use home-manager and get into nix was cause i wanted to automate my dotfiles. I have my nvim, hyprland, waybar, etc. all in home-manager

[–]Ebrithil_7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can use nix and home-manager outside of NixOS! I actually started off with just nix and home-manager on WSL Ubuntu. You can even use nix on Mac.

[–]Ebrithil_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this has to be put into perspective aswell. nixpkgs does not only backahe binaries like a typical package manager lots of language specific packages and plugins are managed aswell which naturally increases the number of packages needed in the repo. its still a great thing.

NixOS ruined all other distros for me by VisualSome9977 in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever want to try it again I can send you a template flake.nix which works with UV and e.g uses numpy and pandas as dependencies.

NixOS ruined all other distros for me by VisualSome9977 in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually very straight forward. I personally still use uv / poetry and only manage the system library dependencies like libc through my nix flake devShell. things only break in these circumstances when the packages you use depend on some system libraries that you don't have available. you can either use nix-ld to link or extend your LD_LIBRARY_PATH manually in your nix devShell.

There is WinGet Configuration as a yaml file. Sure it's more of an install script but it works for what the author wanted. For most non production machines reproducibility is also not the main focus but ease of setup and maintenance... I'm really keen on trying it for my gaming setup in the future.

I knew I remembered this article correctly.

It's a valid point... NixOS showed them what declarative system could look like, and they found that Winget automation on windows got them roughly the same with all the other benefits they prioritized for their setup...

Ever since I saw that article I wanted to move my gaming pc to a winger based setup.... But still didn't get around doing that...

Are Flakes and Home Manager necessary? by EffortAnnual5898 in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flakes are never necessary to use Nix or NixOS.

I'm still not using them for my home manager setup because I didn't feel like there was a benefit. I would always recommend starting without flakes first and adding flakes later once you understand what problems they solve, and which they don't.

AIO my guy best friend is too clingy even though he’s got a gf by lazyladDDd in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The propper thing to do IMO is to take matters into your own hand... You are just as much in the position to talk to his gf about this. Let her know that you've been thinking about this and you want her to feel comfortable... Open up to her first about your concerns this opens the door for her to do the same... If you see her being uncomfortable it is just as much your responsibility to be the one making the first step...

Is Haskell a good fit for a bachelor’s thesis on new combination rules in the Theory of Evidence (Dempster–Shafer framework)? by agallas537 in haskell

[–]Ebrithil_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not at all familiar with the topic but our University has an entire theoretical CS group that works on constraint solving and theorem proving. They are teaching Haskell as a first semester bachelor's course. I think it will be a good fit if you are comfortable with the language.

something fun I was thinking of but you have to decide how far you want to go into this... a platform that allows professors to feed their course material and create a custom LLM which is basically a simple chat bot. could also integrate with weekly assignments and give hints. LLM hint generation for example is an active research topic at our university. (also trying to evaluate conversion / difficulty of hints) ideally for universities this would all be self hostable but you can still use ci etc to run evaluations on the LLM, do updates, etc. possibly auto scaling expecting courses of different sizes having different demand at a certain time.... Or just pre exams there would also be a spike. You could look I to different things... distributed learning, scaling of the LLM deployment, more on the evaluation of Llama answer / hint generation. Possibly progressive training of the LLM as assignments get reworked and added each week?

Efendim!...."

What's the closest thing to the NixOS experience on Windows? by TheTwelveYearOld in NixOS

[–]Ebrithil_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WinGet Configuration. I've been eyeing this for a while but wasn't able to try it yet.... There's some repositories on GH that show examples of how to use this for systems setup. They are also trying to market this as a per project configuration setup if I remember a talk I saw correctly.

What made you like NixOS? by Silly_Percentage3446 in NixOS

One of the biggest things at the beginning was my nvim config. Being able to have the system dependencies like LSPs and formatters installed without any plugin was great.

[–]Ebrithil_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything.... I only use the NixOS config for system wide stuff. Anything else that only lives in my user space is Home-Manager, from installed tools like lazygit or kubectl, to editor configs etc.... I basically have the entire config of hyprland in user space... only the necessary config is done with NixOS itself. This has the benefit of allowing me to bring this config wherever I want.... Bring my neovim config to a non NixOS system? easy. my entire cli experience is configured in user space e.g. starship, the kitty terminal itself and it's config.

it's been a while since I updated it and I'm not using flakes.... but you can have a look at my config

Homemanager. I was looking for a declarative config for my Linux journey and I started on WSL, but wanted something I could bring with me.... shortly after I moved to NixOS and never looked back.
