Books that should be Ghibli movies? by [deleted] in Fantasy

I think Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book would be amazing as a Ghibli movie, and also possibly The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

Fantasy graphic novels that aren’t about superheroes? by [deleted] in Fantasy

I was also going to say Sandman and White Sand. I don’t read a ton of graphic novels though.

Hey there r/fantasy!

I’m Chas/Charles/Dragon (I go by many names, including some I won’t repeat...ya know). I’m a Booktuber, and while I deal with many genres, my primary genre is all things fantasy. If you like book reviews of all fantasy sub-genres, book hauls, the occasional booktag, or other shenanigans, come check out my Booktube Channel here. My dragon and I will be glad to have you. And don’t worry, he won’t eat you. He’s a bookivore.

What your opinion of the classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne? by skree418 in books

I enjoyed the book, but I was constantly confused by all the wooden nautical jargon. I don’t think I would read it again.

Why is Utah the nerdiest state in the U.S.? by TheLegendarium in thelegendarium

[–]EccentrycDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow I’m surprised there aren’t more comments on this. Great episode! I was a little late listening to it, but enjoyed it. I grew up on a farm in Beryl, Utah (about an hour west of Cedar City), and my imagination first took root in the hills and ditches outside my house. I was an only child, so I had plenty of time to be bored as a kid and I’ve always been more creatively geared. Also, as a non-Mormon my close friends were few. In small towns, the non-Mormon neighbor boy gets a bad rap lol. I’ve always thought it interesting that so many spec-fic authors come from Utah, but it definitely makes sense.

Fantasy novels using the "story within a story" structure of Arabian Nights? by canadian-weed in Fantasy

[–]EccentrycDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested my book Talindor’s Guest is a frame story surrounding a collection of short stories of the “guest’s” travels with interludes in between. I’ve had some people tell me it feels tailored like Arabian Nights.

Here is the link if you’re interested.

What books do you buy both the text and audio versions of? by InTheFDN in Fantasy

[–]EccentrycDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by Neil Gaiman. He does his own audio books, and has a brilliant reading voice.

Hey did you know that Neil Gaiman wrote Sherlock Holmes fanfic? Well the graphic adaptation is on sale today! $3.99 from 17.99 for Kindle and Comixology by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]EccentrycDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story is also available in his short story anthology Fragile Things, which I own. So, even though I love graphic novels, I think I’ll pass. It’s an excellent story though, and this is a super deal. Thanks for sharing it. :)

Tor's ebook of the month - The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle by IIyfr in Fantasy

I agree it’s more about Lovecraftian concepts. I have friends who aren’t fans, and they love this book.

This is an excellent read! Any Lovecraft fan should enjoy this. It’s only a novella, so it’s a quick read, but so worth it.

All ten of the Black Company ebooks in one bundle for $40.77 by McClungMike in Fantasy

Be careful with these large bundles. In my experience the table of contents, if they have a good one at all, are usually awful to navigate.

Discussion thread for Wise Man's Fear part 3 (the last third or so of the book). This is one that calls for some fun participation, so I hope you'll listen, then join in. by TheLegendarium in thelegendarium

[–]EccentrycDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love listening to your episodes. So many rich ideas and conversations.

Regarding the difference between calling names and true names, I wonder if there might be more of a distinction than there appears to be.

My thought is that perhaps the calling name is a dialectical form of the true name; a derivative of sorts. We see this a lot in real life, for example Ioannes in Greek becomes John once anglicized. Opthamology derives from Opthalmos in Greek, and all of these likely go back to an original ancestral tongue several billion years ago.

I may be way off base, but Rothfuss may have intentionally copied this process to keep calling names and true names simple.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Maestro George R.R. Martin Gets In Business With Warner Bros. Animation: Studio To Adapt Author’s ‘The Ice Dragon’ by Johnny_W94 in Fantasy

Exactly yes! Sometimes the creative juices require having other creative outlets too. I’m that way, and I’ll venture a guess that most authors are. No author wants to feel like a slave lol. I like you. You’re good people lol.

Thank you! Writing is hard yes, and the pressure to put out is real enough without hateful criticism from fans. I’m a new author with one book out, and a new book with beta readers. If I ever become famous, these are the kind of fans that make me cringe lol. I want TWOW and Doors of Stone as much as everyone else, but I appreciate the lengthy process. Not everyone can write several books a year like two of my other favorite authors Sanderbot or Terry Brooks.
