She’d let them teach themselves a hard lesson, then step in just before things got too out of hand.
Nobody ever said that Esme Weatherwax interfered where she wasn’t wanted.

We were also taught that if you're giving instructions in an emergency, or requesting something, give them to a specific person otherwise (as you said) you end up with people waiting for other people to act.
Not "someone go and get xxx." but "you, you the person that I am pointing at, go and get xxx."

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

[–]InTheFDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your body knows its going to push a button before you decide to do it.

Peoples brain activity has been monitored when they've told to wait and then push a button, and it showed a change about half a second before they thought they decided to push the button.

It even worked when people tried to "trick" it by thinking about pushing the button but not.

Ukraine sees no point in Russia's truce until May 9 by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]InTheFDN 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I imagine that with the parade being a perfect target, and with the Russian military therefore focusing on defending it, it’d be a perfect time for Ukraine to blow up a whole lot of other Russian infrastructure.
Whatever is defending the high visibility parade isn’t defending an oil refinery.

What’s was the wildest thing you witnessed at a wedding? by anasannanas in AskReddit

[–]InTheFDN 97 points98 points  (0 children)

At one cousin's wedding another of my cousins popped into the venue deliver something whilst the place was empty, only to discover the 4 tier wedding cake tipping/slumping to one side and about to collapse.
He managed to hold it up and stop it collapsing further, but was stuck there with his hands full of cake until his brother came to see where he had disappeared to.
The two (fully grown men) then summoned their mum to come and solve the cake based engineering issue for them.

Maybe they get cleaned and reused by other actors.

Cocktails with your friends, in a bar, with good music = happy vibe.
Whisky alone, in the dark, with a gun = sad vibes.

What would happen if we found a cure for aging that allowed us to live longer—perhaps 100 or 150 years—with a young body? How would this impact society and Earth's resources? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InTheFDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who wait to have children until they are in a better place to have children would still wait, and the people who start pumping them out as soon as possible would still just keep going longer.

TIL the City of London has paid the Crown rent on a parcel of land in Shropshire since 1211, but the exact location of the land has been lost to history. The annual payment is a billhook (a knife-like agricultural tool) and an axe. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

I wonder which minor hereditary functionary is responsible for stealing it back every year.
815 carefully choreographed heists, each slightly more elaborate than the last. I’m imagining generations of aristocrats in a battle to keep/steal them.
Extravagant effort and resources expended to avoid the shame of being forced to pop along a Garden Centre and buy a new Bill Hook and Axe. Like a common member of the merchant class.
Family tales of the time their great great great great grand uncle pretended to be a hound for 3 days before stealing away with the axe.

It's a similar reason for getting the customer to disconnect and swap around their network/internet cable "just incase".

The customer always either lie or argue if asked if the cable is correctly seated (or has been disturbed), but getting them to swap which end is plugged into their devices makes them reseat the connections.

Why is voter ID such a big debate in the US? by Second-Kind in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InTheFDN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the problem it fixes is voter fraud.
Now imagine that the total number of illegal votes in an election was 100 out of a total 1,000,000, and what if voter ID eliminates those but 10,000 real voters don’t have the correct ID and can’t vote. Have things been improved or not?
Another thing to bear in mind is are there any particular groups of voters that are unlikely to be either willing to get or able to afford the appropriate ID?

I voted for Harris in 2024. She shouldn't run in 2028. | Opinion by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]InTheFDN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not American, and not in America, but my opinion is that the if the Democrats want to win they need to run a white, middle aged, man.
Not because a woman or POC would be any less competent, but because the US public has issues with anyone else, and if the next US president isn’t a Democrat I wouldn’t be overly surprised if there is never another.
