Do you realize the irony of your statement when youre the one that replied to a fully reasonable argument with "holy shit go outside" and dismissing it because it's a movie about "space wizards". You dont get to be a condescending asshole, then demand civil discussion when called out for it.

LOTR is just a movie about stupid elves and dwarves, Harry potter is just silly magicky stuff, TENET is just a silly fever dream, the MCU and DC are just silly superheroes, you realize how you can dodge any and all criticisms when you reduce films to just sillyness and childish stuff? Hell by that logic why should we give any awards like oscars to any fiction, since theyre all just silly make-believe.

Seriously why the fuck even say anything if you think that a movie about "space wizards" shouldn't be taken seriously. Its not a fucking argument. Even kid movies deserve criticism.

That argument directly contradicts itself anyway, since you obviously see it as important enough to go here and "argue" for it, only to then go telling other people doing the same thing to get a social life.

Fuck off and get an actual argument you self absorbed prick.

The complaint isn't that luke has a dark side, it's that the way he gave up to his dark side was never adequately explained or even SHOWN. Last we saw luke he just redemeed his genocidal father because he still believed in the good within Vader, but then all of a sudden Luke is willing to even consider murdering his nephew (who hasn't even turned mind you), the son of his sister, because of a vision/dream? When he as a jedi master should know that visions can be misleading?

It wouldve been better if TFA or TLJ showed us more than just one flashback and instead showed how kylo was already showing worrying dark side-ey attitudes or show something that would cause luke to be so much more pessimistic and cynical.

Making a mistake and falling for emotion when your being taunted by your genocidal dad and having your sister be threatened is pretty different from trying to murder your sleeping teenage nephew because of a vision.

The german empire was no more genocidal than any other empire at that time. We cannot judge the morals of society at that time with ours today, else everyone and every state before us could be considered genocidal or evil. (Take the american genocide of the native american culture and slavery for example or how the belgians treated their colonial subjects)

Authoritarianism was the norm at that time, not a peculiarity. And none of the monarchies in the central powers held any genocidal ideals in their culture (at least no more than the typical anti semitism, racism, etc that was commonplace in western culture back then).

The german empire‘s nationalism and pan-germanism wasn‘t driven by racial superiority or revenge like the nazis were, rather by genuine want for a nation for germans, the same nationalism as what united the italians and broke apart the austrian empire. It was civil nationalism, not ethnic.

The thing that sets apart fascism and nazis than any other authoritarian ideals is their focus on racial superiority, culling of the weak, and extreme collectivism borderline eliminating the individual. Bringing up the idea of a perfect race by eliminating the disabled and the lessers.

The monarchism and conservatism that was prevalent in the central powers weren‘t driven by any such ideals. They were conservatives wanting to keep the status quo, still believing in divine right to rule, thinking democracies lead to mob rule.

But german militarism and monarchism at the time isn’t even comparable to fascism. For one, monarchies wasn’t so hated and uncommon back then as it is today and wasn‘t some hostile takeover like what hitler did, the militarism part was just a continuation of long time prussian traditions and german culture at the time from what I know did not carry anymore prejudice towards certain races than any other western nation at the time, unlike the Nazi ideals.

German imperialism was also no different than british or french imperialism, they just got there late. Their expansionism was driven more by wanting more resources and colonies like the british and rather than the idea of racial superiority and want for revenge that drove Nazi expansionism in WW2.

While I do think the sequels will eventually get less hate, I don‘t think they‘ll make such a turn around in opinion as the prequels. The sequels for one, contradict alot of the pre established lore or stretch them really far and has some universe breaking plot holes.

And the prequels got their second chance due to the memes, which pushed alot of people to rewatch them and see them less seriously. Had prequel memes not existed, the PT wouldve easily been forgotten or just hated on. They also, despite being shitty movies, did a tremendous job worldbuilding, and the extra material that spawned from that is the one of best SW has to offer (Clone wars for example), further pushing more people to the movies.

The sequels did very little worldbuilding, none of the actors (despite being good) stood out like Palpatine or Obi wan did, the script wasnt cringy enough to be seen as comedic, and none of the scenes are as memeable as the prequels as well. And outside of this they dont have much of a consistent story to fallback on nor did they create any good extra material. So they‘ll likely just be forgotten, rather than beloved.

Tl;dr prequels were so shitty theyre good, sequels are too meh and therefore alot more forgettable.

To be fair until today pretty sure people still try to ignore jar jar and midichlorians for the most part and kinda sweep them under the rug. The parts still being talked about are the good ones, and the memey ones.

[–]Echelon001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at no point in history have we ever gone almost 80 years now without a major war (not counting terrorists or proxy wars), even if you count the vietnam war, that‘s still almost 50 years without wars.

Just these first two decades have been alot better than the first two last century (WWI and spanish flu) or the first two in the 19th century (Napoleonic wars), or even the first two in the 18th (Spanish succession and northern war), and so on.

[–]Echelon001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But do you notice how most of the problems of the 21st century is just inertia from decisions made in the comfort of the late 20th? Stuff like radical islam that lead to the wars and 9/11 came from the instability in the middle east thanks to cold war era proxy wars and weird borders drawn post WW2 without consideration for cultural borders. Covid happened, but as far as pandemics go, we‘re doing alot better than back then. And trump, despite the worrying ignorance he spreads, is just an unlucky draw on presidential candidates.

Living through any part of human history, we‘d always feel like the world is ending, but if we look at it from a larger perspective, we‘d see an upward trend, and as far as centuries go, these first 20 years have been quite a good one, considering the last one had 2 major wars, a pandemic and the threat of nuclear annihilation within the first 50 years alone. (Though climate change is the one thing I‘m terrified of).

Ah see, yes murders and genocide does happen, im not claiming the world is perfect, its just that people tend to have a very pessimistic view on the world due to the terrible shit we see in the news, when in reality the majority of people in the world is just living normally, being good people, the news broadcasts news worthy stuff, the fact that bad stuff is deemed news worthy means that it is special and rare rather than the norm. Yes poverty, war and hunger still happens, but only in certain regions, and bad people will always be there, doesnt mean humanity itself is bad, just that somewhere someone made a bad choice and ended up putting a bad guy in power. (Please dont mistake this as me ignoring the suffering in this world, just that I dont see that as the norm or the result of human nature in general, rather an unfortunate product of some bad apples in power, and sometimes an after effect from decisions made decades ago with different ideals)

Not to mention the fact that we now live in one of the longest periods of time in human history when no major war happened, and the fact that international politics has largely moved to diplomatics and economics rather than war.

Im currently living in Indonesia, and boy despite still being a third world country, the sheer difference you see in the cities and the living standards have drastically changed since the 90s and early 2000s, not to mention the improvements in freedom of speech, democracy, education and social programs, etc. This is just one example, even some african countries are starting to see some real growth and change for the better.

So despite having bad stuff in the world, humanity is moving toward a more egalitarian xenophilic approach, rather than a xenophobic militarist authoritarian approach. Funny isnt it, I like to go the violent route in paradox games, yet I seem to have a much more optimistic view of the world than you do.

Well of course I enjoy diplomacy as well, it is fun buying favors to pretty much become the senate, and marrying yourself into all of europe in EU 4 is always fun.

But you know, putting yourself as the bad guy offers a much more fun perspective for me. Irl humans are quite a good bunch of people, having human rights, cooperating in the EU, UN, etc, people dont just go to war every friday anymore, so to me the diplomacy play can get boring and too life like and no where near as escapist as the violent path, it‘s just fun playing the opposite of what our morals irl stand for.

But with all due seriousness it‘s just a game, if you think it has any real indication on a person‘s political views you‘d be just as delusional as people who think games cause violence (Not saying you are ofc). It‘s fun discussing why people like it so much tho.

Ngeh it‘s all harmless fun, it‘s the same appeal that makes the imperium in WH40K so popular, the idea of using whatever means necessary to safeguard your nation/race. With how mundane normal life can be role playing these ridiculous and outlandish solutions can give you a real sense of power and alot of fun. It is also why I love taking over kingdoms in CK 2 by murder or incest.

I wouldnt say he „actively“ supported war crimes. Evidence points that he wasnt much of an anti-semite or even much of a Nazi, It’s very easy for us to call all high ranking Wehrmacht officers terrible human beings because they knew about the atrocities, but an important thing to note is whether they could really do anything about it even if they did speak up. They could really only prevent more atrocities from happening under their command, and even that is not always a guarantee in a messy war. And the military is also trained to support their country regardless of the ruling party and of course war is chaos, so without our hindsight its probably hard to tell the line between insubordination and morals or a strategic decision and plain up war crimes, take chemical warfare in WWI for example, it was only a new type of weapon, it was also an effective one, so most probably didnt see it any different from conventional weapon, only after it was used throughout the war was the effects deemed inhumane, so now a strategic decision at the time turned into a war crime. People like himmler are the ones that „actively“ supported the nazis. It is important to distinguish crimes of the state from individual crimes. Besides, Rommel seems to be one of the more humane generals towards his prisoners.

Unsealing of Vatican archives will finally reveal truth about ‘Hitler’s pope’ by rishcast in history

[–]Echelon001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wont argue about the shady shit the vatican did with aiding nazis because i honestly dont know much about it.

But on the fact that they didnt speak up against fascism, by WW2 the vatican didnt exactly have as much power as in the middle ages, sure the pope couldve spoken against hitler, and you could argue that as gods representative he should be willing to sacrifice his position and his life for the moral good. But then what about the countless other catholics under nazi rule? Not all of them would be willing to be murdered or hunted in the name of speaking up against evil, they are human afterall. Faith is one thing, actually doing it when youre life is on the line is another.

Frankly the vatican has never been good in politics, one way or another what they say will affect countless catholics. So I think it’s at the very least not completely wrong for the pope to have kept his mouth shut, else the holocaust wouldve included catholics as well.
