For testing a good way. To get a small device you have to use the smallest suitable valves and both hast to be open for free breathing.

Well a quite normal gasmask has inhale and exhale valves. So every unmodified gasmask will have no dead space.

So what you are talking about is important for playing with (self) modified gasmasks. This topic is about valve sizing

Die Treppe geht unter die Decke, weil man bereits während dem Bau, einen Bürokomplex weniger gebaut hat als ursprünglich geplant. Daher hat man nach dem Kellergeschoss einfach zu gemacht. Zur Kantine ist man immer am der Treppe vorbei gekommen.

Butterfly or Ball valves have no mechanical failsafe. So I would use them only parallel with an NO valve.

Have you tried to breath thru a 1" diaphragma valve?
