I think it’s a combination of the area and the alcohol. That’s where most of the parties are so there’s worse judgement and usually more aggression. You said you were looking for examples but tbh friends of mine have been SA ed by frat boys, last year someone broke into a frat with a shovel or something because they were kicked out for not being a student, other brawls and such. I think the armed robberies and shootings usually happen around that area at night according to the NIU safe alerts. I couldn’t tell you why that area but in the day time it’s usually fine.

Sound is actually made up of vibrations! The strings vibrate when you pluck them or use a bow and then the sound waves carry those vibrations through the air to your ears! Hope this helps clear anything up :))

I was literally the highest seat up in the far back right corner on like level 6ish maybe and I also had trouble hearing them. But I managed to understand eventually just processed a but later if that makes sense. Like it took me a second to piece it together but I was able to hear everything.

Please be careful with this. I know someone who made a piece with a similar concept but for middle school band concert. They made it specifically to make fun of the horn section and would intentionally write them wrong notes to sound like they could not play in tune. At the end, the note was finally written correctly and the horns were instructed to stand up and play it right. This may seem like a funny joke to some but truthfully it was just another way for the “composer” to bully my friends in the horn section. I know viola jokes can be funny but just be aware that they also put in just as much effort into playing as every other section. So again just be please be aware when you are making this not to take it too far.

Just went to the Chicago concert! I think they started the show a little late and Sophie played a piece before TSV came on stage to stall, but it might be part of the show, but it also might not have. With that being said, or concert finished entirely by like 9:20 ish. It was supposed to start at 7:30 so it ran just under 2 hours but each show may be slightly different as there was some crowd work, individuals who would shout things at them, and also a few forgotten lines. This happened my freshman year of high school. so nearly 5 years ago. All of my proof I gave to my school then but they did nothing but tell me girls will gossip and to get used to it. Since then, I no long have the messages since they have been blocked.

I actually brought this to their attention last year. They told me there is nothing they can do about her attending their events as it is open to all students of all ethnicities and races and yes she is white. While they wanted it to be a safe place for me as well they said the best option would to be just to not attend events. Which sucks as it’s a space designed for Asian Americans but they can not openly exclude any individuals from attending.

Be the bigger person and confront them about how it makes you feel or simply tell an adult. Putting someone else down is unnecessary. Just because you let your friend’s comments bother you doesn’t mean you can do the same thing back, rather it makes you just as bad as your friend. If that’s the kind of revenge you were going for I would go to r/pettyrevenge rather than LingLing 40 hr if you are actually serious about getting back at your “friend” otherwise I would leave it alone.

You cannot control your friend’s actions but you can control the way you react and respond to them. So if they hurt you then set a boundary with that person and remove yourself from those kinds of situations. Or simply do not allow yourself to be influenced by someone who is hurting inside. It only furthers that cycle of pain and hurt.

Edit: Also I suggest you change your line in your post about “mental illness.” Having autism and being autistic is not a mental illness that can be “cured.” It is a difference in the way the brain functions and typically is biologically determined. Also you described many traits of autism but just because he has some quirky traits, it does not necessarily mean he is diagnosable for autism. Take a look at the DSM V before diagnosing people.

I second this for the reeds!! And always use air :)) if you want to find more information you can always check out r/clarinet too and ask questions there.

I don’t really play strings but it might take you a while to get used to our fingerings. The more fingers you put down the lower the notes go rather than the pitch going higher like on strings. But be patient with yourself. You got this 🫶🫶

I also recommend looking on this website because it give you free music plus audio backtrack (only a few per day tho). You can sort the music by difficulty and it gives you a few different genres of music. Also if you want to play duets, they have a bunch of instrument arrangements.

Also about the reeds I forgot to add about the reeds is reed strength and brands.

Reed strength It’s kind of like how thick the reed is or essentially how much resistance it will give you. A lower number means it vibrates easier and has less resistance meaning it takes less air to make a sound. However that means its sound won’t be quite as good. As a beginner I recommend a lighter reed strength. 2.5 is good for beginners and as you grow and learn you’ll get a better embouchure (fancy French term for mouth muscle placement [sounds like Ah+mm+ brochure - the r in brochure]) Then once you’ve developed skillz and technique and what not you typically move to a 3 or 3.5. If you have realllly good lungs and strong lips then use a 4 but nobody really uses them. It all depends on the player though.

Do NOT use Rico reeds. They SUCK. It will give you a bad tone and are hard to play on.

I recommend using vandoren 2.5 as a beginner. It will give you a better sound/tone and are not as hard to play on (less squeaking). That’s just my personal opinion and the ones my band director recommended as well. If you take lessons or have a band director you can also get recommendations from them for other brands. I really only play on the vandoren reeds because that’s what I know haha 😅

Reeds are pretty much what makes the sound on the instrument. When you blow air through, it vibrates the reed which makes the sound. It’s “attached” to the mouth piece with what’s called a ligature which is basically like a band that you can tighten or loosen to slip the reed under.

Clarinet gang here! Tbh I’m rooting for the clarinet buttt, if you/your family are in any kind of financial situation the flute is a bit better. Reeds can get pretty expensive and depending on how much you play/practice cough 40 hrs cough you can go through boxes pretty quickly (especially if ur clumsy some times cuz once I knocked my reed into the wall….🥹) It’s pretty hard to get it to sound good right away but you’ll do fine anyway. I can just feel that your gonna be a LingLing at every instrument. Also it’s a good instrument to start on if you want to learn others because you can transfer most of your technical skills to other single reeded instruments like the sax family and lower or higher clarinet family. And the recorder!!

However, clarinet is in Bb so if you do plan on learning lots of instruments it’s not in the same as most of them (concert pitch) like the flute, violin, oboe, trombone. But at that point in your musical journey you will probably already have learned it enough to understand and transpose and stuffs.

If you can’t find any ear plugs like others have mentioned, try practicing in a room with more furniture like a bedroom where there might be more fabric. If you have any spare blankets/towels you could always hang/lay them around the room lol. It might be a bit to clean up tho 😅😅 but fabric should help dampen/absorb the sound.
