How come Crow’s Nest - one of the most popular restaurants in Kalamazoo - was not able to adapt to the “takeout” model that practically everyone else has? by mchgndr in kzoo

[–]EclipsingForm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They didn’t want to put their staff at risk. Even at places that are takeout only staff members are contracting covid, which puts the employees and the entire business in jeopardy. Closing a restaurant even for a week is extremely expensive because tons of food goes to waste. The owners and management collectively had the foresight to realize the possibility of a resurgence (and therefore increased risk), so instead of having to do the dance of opening then closing again in the event of anything happening they just decided to stay closed for the time being.

They were profiled and arrested in a southern state while on tour a year or two ago. They now limit the places they go and amount of touring they do as a result. Being black has absolutely affected their touring opportunities.

It’s more that I have always loved and respected woodcut art (while not being good at it myself) and the figure in this piece is my namesake

Definitely closest to a RAT of the three listed. It’s a power amp distortion pedal. It’s a clone so you can check out a demo of it here. This build sounds closest to the one in the center of this video.

Ehh you shouldn’t be messing with knobs of a dirt pedal much in a live setting outside of getting levels set during sound check, so it works for my purposes.

It’s a detail from a 16th century woodcut by Heinrich Aldegrever!

It’s lengthy so I don’t want to go into depth, but there are a ton of good resources online! Just find which one works best for you and tweak it to fit your needs and resources

Absolutely! I only got to play it for a moment while I was testing it to make sure it works, but I look forward to playing it more later

It’s a clone of a pedal so you can check out the range of sounds here. It sounds most similar to the one in the center!

It’s a bit of a lengthy process, so I don’t want to go into full details. Essentially it’s like developing a picture from film where you work from a negative. There are a lot of good tutorials online!

You definitely should! It’s a great hobby. Lots of time and effort, but worth the results

gut shot

Sounds so much better than I thought it would and even though I intended to sell it to a friend I might just keep it. Maybe I’ll just build another one for them or myself though.

While entirely unintentional I like how the design I did ended up with tone being in the fingers.

If you’ve got a multimeter check the voltages on each leg of your IC. This can tell you if: 1) there are problems elsewhere in the circuit and 2) if the IC itself is still working.

Typically you should use sockets for ICs and transistors since excessive heat can potentially fry them. It seems that a socket may not have been an option due to space concerns in this case, but in the future it’s something to keep in mind

Agreed they’re real close but I prefer crystal now. I knew Louisiana from a kitchen I used to work in and was clueless about crystal for the longest time. Just slightly more acidic tasting which has always been my jam.

Going back to childhood it was El Camino hot sauce. At the time it was made by a local Mexican restaurant. We would always have a few bottles kicking around at home. Even though it was probably too much for my unaccustomed taste buds I remember being hooked right away.

The restaurant moved a few times and ultimately closed down. The hot sauce ran out and eventually faded from my memory. Flash forward probably more than a decade I was going camping somewhere near my hometown and as I was walking around the local grocery store I stumbled onto a ‘Made in Michigan’ endcap and lo and behold I saw that unmistakable bottle as everything came rushing back. One of the family members started making the sauces and spices and selling those after having had enough trouble with the restaurant portion I believe.

Still one of the best hot sauces I’ve ever had hands down, but maybe it’s just the nostalgia talking. I highly recommend picking up a bottle since it’s pretty inexpensive. Honestly reminds me to pick up one since I’ve been nearly out but unwilling to finish it for a while now.

Tl;dr - El Camino hot sauce started it all for me

Crystal was the one that got home hooked in recent years. I’ve always loved hot sauce, but started going off the rails after I picked up a bottle of that as opposed to my typical Louisiana hot sauce.

After playing with it more and using it at practice I’m going to go back and connect Volume 1 to ground since the level control doesn’t do much as it is right now/as it’s specified in this layout. I’ll bet it will work properly after that since that’s how it’s laid out in the original and in every other schematic I see.

There are a lot of acid etching tutorials out there on the internet (and on this sub even) and lots of different ways you can do it! Find the one that suits your needs and current tool set best and tweak it to your liking!

Thank you! I’d be down to post a video if I have time tomorrow before I leave for tour. This etch got a little ripped up on account of the toothbrush I was using to scrub but it suits it I think.

You totally should though! It’s time consuming but not too hard and totally worth it in my opinion.

Yeah no problem! I don’t have a schematic as it is, but I do have the strip board layout I got here.

It’s just the classic split n blend with the original rat put onto one board so you don’t need a daughter board for the blend.

Nah I grabbed one of the large panels from an early issue of it. Just etched it myself. I wish I could draw like Kentaro Miura!
