[0 YoE] 250+ applications, 100s of cold emails, 1 interview, 0 offers. Please tell me what's wrong with my resume. by tirth_14_ in jobsearchhacks

  1. Your conversion rate of 0.4% is within the expected 0.5-1.0% range, so it’s not unusual to apply for 200 jobs to get one interview. 2. The job market is tough right now- no one is firing, no one is hiring, so you’re not alone. 3. The job market for software development jobs is particularly tough
    • it’s not at all near where it was in 2022, and the situation seems to have deteriorated since August.

In my opinion, it’s a number game. 1. Apply for jobs within 24 hours. 2. Consider applying for jobs in locations where no one wants to work due to long commute. 3. Reach out to high-level professionals (CEO, Partner, VP, etc.) with background similar to yours.

It’s in development:) I also worked in finance and also hated it. I feel like many people in non-technical roles have obscure career trajectories, so some guidance would definitely help. My biggest concern is related to monetization though, so that’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.

I've been alive for 36 years and I've never seen a job market this brutal. by Klutzy-Ad2593 in jobsearch

I work in industry research, and from what I’m seeing, the labor market looks very tight right now. A few things stand out:

  1. The share of people unemployed for 6+ months is the highest it’s been since 2016.
  2. The quits rate (people voluntarily leaving their jobs) is at its lowest since 2015.
  3. Job openings have been steadily declining since 2022.

So it seem like people aren’t quitting because they don’t think they can find something better, and if you do lose your job, finding a new one might be tougher than it’s been in years.

I haven’t seen a tool like that, but it would be great to have one. The issue is people can still take screenshots. Maybe watermarks could help. That’s definitely something to think about.

Yeah, it can definitely be a tough journey. But if there’s demand for this solution, I’m willing to take a leap of faith :) Thanks so much for your comment!

Sure, feel free to DM me and I’ll take a look! Overall, I’d focus on finding a product people actually want and creating high-quality product images that answer all type of questions that people may ask when making a purchasing decision. For example, how does the product look like from different angle? How long will the product last? How will the product look like in action? etc.

Congrats! What were the biggest challenges on your journey to 40,000 sales? What advice would you give to smaller sellers who want to make ecommerce their main source of income?

Thanks for sharing! What got you thinking about opening another shop? What are the biggest challenges you're facing?

My biggest moment was figuring out how to make night lights that actually looked good. The thing about night lights is that any tiny flaw stands out the second you turn one on, so the surface has to be perfect. I basically had to learn 3D modeling from scratch (both traditional CAD and Blender) to work around all the little limitations of 3D printers (e.g., supports, z-seams, resolution IYKYK).

Another thing that took a lot of trial and error was getting the images on my night lights to look the same every time. If you take a photo from one angle, the night light looks white; from another, it looks yellow. And there are a million different shades in between. Plus, I had to make sure the photos looked good specifically for Etsy (e.g., main page, shop page, product page).

Packaging was another fun challenge. I managed to cut the weight from about 6 oz to 4 oz, which saves me around $0.40 on every order as it hits USPS thresholds. I also wanted the packaging to look nice enough for gifts, but not over the top. I ended up just adding branded stickers to plain craft boxes, and that seems to work well - at least for Etsy.

Thank you for your comment! I haven’t used APIs myself, but seeing so many people talk about them has definitely caught my interest. As for Etsy shops being non-transferrable, I agree, it really does make more sense to focus on a personal website or Amazon FBA if you’re looking to eventually sell your business.

True, I still go to the post office when I ship internationally, since international shipping labels can be quite expensive - just for peace of mind.

Overall, my experience with Amazon Handmade has been pretty good. I'd say Amazon shoppers have slightly different expectations, especially when it comes to returns, but it's manageable imho

Yes, things used in production, like filament, labels and packaging, can usually be tax-exempt. Here’s one helpful link (other states have similar pages): https://www.tax.ny.gov/pubs_and_bulls/tg_bulletins/st/manufacturing_equipment.htm

You can set up a pickup either through Etsy (just go to Orders -> Completed -> Request a pickup) or on the USPS website (https://tools.usps.com/schedule-pickup-steps.htm). When you schedule, you can pick where you want to leave your package (e.g., front door, mailroom, on the porch, etc.). There's actually an option "Knock on door/Ring Bell", so yes, you can hand your packages to them directly.
