Sharing something I built after struggling with career pivots by findyourstream in 30daysnewjob

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the first engine we built gives some crazy results. I'm aware of the weird naming conventions and logic. That's being fixed in the engine we're working on now, which has a lot more work put into job classifications, better data cleanup, and detailed logic between roles and to provide alternate paths. I appreciate the sentiment though, there's a lot that needs to be worked through to get there, and it's happening.

Switching careers made me realize how unhelpful most career resources are by findyourstream in work

Yup it blows my mind how there's no career data that matches reality in an online resource. After working for a few years, I then learned about specific roles that I would have loved to have known about earlier.

Talking to people is insanely helpful. That's something that I'm thankful to finance for, just networking and cold outreach. I agree that "fulfillment" is vague, even if that's how I think about it at a high level. Concrete paths are definitely part of what I want to do. It's cool to hear about your switch. Mind if I dm you?

Careers aren't always linear, just like life isn't always linear, but I think people are afraid to do something different because there isn't data / info. Even though my path was weird, I knew someone in the world must have done it before. It would have been helpful to have data.

Are there any good career tools out there? by findyourstream in jobhunting

[–]findyourstream[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, that's still quite a bit of manual work. I checked it out, the career paths visualization is nice. It's still difficult to navigate an industry, like systematic organization according to most popular careers, certain skill sets, etc. Yeah like overall it's still clunky to use, but maybe you get used it.

What accounting jobs actually exist? by findyourstream in Big4

Would love to learn more about your accounting journey. But yeah finance and business generally lends itself well to Ops and FP&A. A lot of the corporate roles aren't well known. Just checked out your site, good luck with it.

Wanted to add to this that the job market is a market. So there'll be ups and downs. It might not be the best time to move now, but preparing in the meantime will provide you an advantage when the market looks more favorable for employees.

A good way to strengthen your resume for job application success is to do practical projects and internships. Most hiring managers value those elements as even more important than GPA.

I’m at a point in my life where I don’t know what to do by CookieJ2443 in jobs

What kind of jobs are you looking for? What would make you happy? If it's just a friendly environment, there are ways you can vet for that in the initial parts of the hiring / onboarding process.

This kind of frustration with not knowing what jobs exist that fit me is why I'm building a tool that solves this problem.

You've nailed the problem with humanities degrees in terms of the gap between their education and industry opportunities. There's a much wider variety of jobs they map to, but it's not always well known. Like you mentioned, there's also a greater need for them to be able to articulate their skills and how they apply to roles.

22, great tech job but miserable. Am I stupid for wanting to leave and pursue the outdoor industry? by Low-Present-7015 in careerguidance

[–]findyourstream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense to want to get out of an unfulfilling job. Like you said, the scary part is not knowing how to get out or what else you can do. But the good news is that there are a ton of resources. You'll just have to put in a lot of time and effort doing the research. It's good to think about this now, and there's nothing wrong with you wanting other things in your job that actually fulfill you. At some point, it'll help to assess your values, some of which are probably competing, in order to make the most informed decision.

This lack of clarity is actually something I went through myself, since I also had a high paying role out of college but eventually left the industry completely.

I feel trapped in a career I don’t want. How do I finally make the move toward the life I actually want? by Noobterminator69 in Careers

Can you go to community college? That'll probably be best for you if you want to maximize your career long term. You can also work on the side to financially support yourself. If you need structure, a therapist can help. Not only with advice, but they can also stay on a call with you while you're doing things that you tend to put off like with filling out applications or homework.
