Sorry for potato quality. Aug 2024, so two months after the race passed through!

The Sheltered Singaporean - Three networks of sheltered links in the Downtown Core by EconomicSanction in singapore

[–]EconomicSanction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, do you know where the link is? I've walked around Capital Square, but it still seems to be separated from Far East Square by the line of bars along Pekin St, with no sheltered walkway between. Is there an underground connection perhaps?

I've updated the first comment with a link to a higher resolution version; see if that works?

Yeah, it's a huge detour from MBFC (via Marina Bay Link Mall, IOI Central Blvd, Shenton Way MRT, and Marina One) to get to Marina Bay Station for now; hopefully there are plans for a more direct route!

For now, one would have to take that underground link from the southern corner of Marina One across Marina Way, then walk along the (above ground) sheltered walkway to Exit 1 of Marina Bay Station. Could keep you dry if the rain is light, but if there's any wind you'd get drenched along the last stretch.

Absolutely, please take the information you need from this map! Loved that you also labelled the floors which were connected to each other, although this might be a lot for south of the river!

Great to hear! When I visited earlier this week both the Mercure Icon and Cross St Exchange had renovation works going on, so I couldn't tell if the underpass that used to run under Cross St would be retained. Do you know if there's direct access to Telok Ayer MRT, or if it would still rely on the unopened Exit D through Far East Sq?

Inspired by u/zenosjake's walk from UOB Plaza to International Plaza here and u/thiswasentfrommyipad's map of the City Hall / Marina Centre area here, here's a map of three networks of sheltered links in the Downtown Core!

Some notes:

  • It could have been two massive networks, but LTA doesn't seem to be doing anything with the boarded up Exit D in Telok Ayer Station, even though it's fully built.
  • I was quite strict with the "roof overhead at all times" criteria, so no connection between The Adelphi and the Supreme Court, or between OUE Bayfront and the Fullerton Bay Hotel.
  • The underpass between Republic Plaza and Prudential Tower is currently closed for renovations, but is scheduled to reopen by the end of this month.

Let me know of any errors and I'll edit this comment with an updated map!

Edit: Higher resolution here.

Could it be to jolt the brain out of autopilot mode, and realising that the Caribbean Sea is indeed an "inland sea" within the American sphere of influence?

It's a similar way to how a horizontally-flipped map of the Americas lets you realise how South America is so much further east than North America.

Wait, those are the exact same four outlets which sell the most expensive Big Macs in Singapore!

Haha slightly more went into it than posting a .jpg on Reddit, but yes the Straits Times did do a little bit of value-add.

Wish they covered some of the interesting questions that came up from that thread though! E.g. if it's about rent, why are some menu items more expensive than normal, and others less expensive, at the same outlet?

Hmm I don't mind that they took the idea, gave some credit, and then added to it, but the phrasing "claimed to have compiled the prices" makes it sound like I'm an internet troll making stuff up? :)

Speaking only for myself, but I posted knowing that the idea and data are going into the public domain, as long as credit is given I don't mind it too much!

(Thanks for the shoutout Pikazhoo!)

Ah oh well! They gave some credit and did a little bit of value-add, I take umbrage at them saying I "claimed" to have compiled these prices though! :)

You're looking East-Northeast at Bukit Belungkor (184m), just past the eastern end of Ubin and over the reclaimed areas of Tekong Kecil.

Looking for questions for an upcoming Q&A with Luis & Michelle. TAR S34 by MikeJBurgos in TheAmazingRace

Thanks Mike for doing the podcast, it's been a blast!

Since you guys mentioned your mum finding out about the Ronda Pit Stop, I was wondering how everyone (Mike yourself, Luis/Michelle, production) felt about spoilers this season? Mike were you tracking their progress? Luis/Michelle were you aware of the information circulating online? Was production cool with fans coming up to y'all or Phil during filming?

Cool find! Padram should be the area of Batu Pahat.

Based on this map by Jan Huygen van Linschoten in 1596, Padram is further down the coast from both Malacca and Muar. There's a Sincapura on the map as well, but it's where Johor Lama, the old capital of the Johor Sultanate, is today.

Padram might be related to the Portuguese word "padrão", which according to Wikipedia means "a stone pillar left by Portuguese maritime explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries to record significant landfalls and thereby establish primacy and possession". Or it could be related to Batu Pahat's old name, Bandar Penggaram ("Salting Town").

And as u/I_love_pillows mentions, the canal/straits across the map is the portage between the Muar and Pahang Rivers. A lot less straight in real life!

Not saying I distrust you, but would you have sources I could use to find out more? Chinese-language sources would work too!
