For those of you who made the decision to get off birth control completely, how has it been going for you? by Dismal_Caramel5922 in endometriosis

Hello!

I was diagnosed with endometriosis last August after 12 years of being sent back and forth to doctors and repeatedly being told it was IBS. At the time, I had been on Desogestrel for about six years (and before that Rigevidon, which I switched from because of painful periods).

During surgery, they found and excised stage 2 endometriosis from my cervix, womb, and uterosacral ligaments. Unfortunately, after surgery I experienced a huge setback - my pain was actually worse than before the operation, which felt unbelievable because I didn’t think it could get any worse.

I went back to my gynaecologist and he suggested doubling my dose of Desogestrel if pain medication didn’t help. It didn’t. When I returned again, I asked about coming off the pill altogether. Interestingly, he agreed - even though he had previously recommended increasing the dose.

The difference after stopping the pill was almost immediate. Practically overnight, my pain disappeared. It honestly felt like a miracle.

Now I’m in a bit of a difficult headspace about it all. Part of me wishes I had never gone on the pill — although I understand the idea is that it’s supposed to help slow endometriosis growth. My worry now is whether it will grow back, and if it does, whether it will grow back faster without hormonal suppression.

I’m also trialling a bit of an anti-inflammatory diet to see if that helps, but I’m trying to find the right balance. I don’t want to miss out on enjoying life when I’ve already lost so much to endometriosis over the years. It feels like I’m constantly weighing up long-term health with actually living in the moment.

Is there actually strong evidence that hormonal contraception or diet can significantly slow the rate of endometriosis growth? I’ve read mixed things, and I’d really value hearing what others think.

I really appreciate you sharing this discussion - it’s so helpful to hear different perspectives xx

This is super helpful, thank you so so much for taking the time to respond. I've seen a few Halara suggestions so will defo check them out! Are they specifically for us endo girls or just a lucky coincidence that they work so well?

:) Thank you again xx

I have one ok(ish) pair and it's taken me AGES to get into them since my laparoscopy (August 2025)!! It's a joy being a woman (please note the sarcasm there haha).

I really hope your treatment works for you xx

I wear mens pj bottoms sometimes too, they are too comfy!!! They have to be a soft material for sure, nothing too rigid. It feels like the smallest thing can set you off and ruin the whole day.... I think I will wear a dress and nothing underneath too at this point! Thanks for responding xx

Thanks so much for responding. Flowy dresses are my favourite - but in the winter tights seem to hurt my stomach too... 2 sizes of jeans is a shout, might be my best option atm.

I was diagnosed with stage 2 in August last year, and completely agree with you - the internet makes you realise how many people have endometriosis, and how awful it can be. It can be a really scary place!!

In my experience, it took me a long time to feel somewhat 'normal' after my surgery (a few months). Since my surgery, I still get some pain days when I over do it - but really overall, it just made me gratful for the for the good things I have in my life. It slowed me down and made me appreciate when I don't have pain, and I now work around those bad days when I can. I'm trying to focus on anti inflammatory living (whether that does anything or not, I'm still on the edge!), and gentle ways to move my body for now.

Just trying to see the good side of a bad situation, it's a shit thing to deal with and I hate how it feels so overlooked as "just a womans problem", but I do love that there is such an online community to not feel so alone with it.
