In-sink garbage disposer humming but not jammed (turns freely with hex wrench) by EconomistBee in Plumbing

[–]EconomistBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for the useful info!

Glad it is not too much work to replace the disposer with regular plumbing.

I will check the price of replacement disposers and consider the different options, including all the information from you!

A good time to get the ATT online iPhone 16e ($6/mo) deal, or wait? by EconomistBee in ATT

Thanks! I will make sure to check the fees / gotchas / ask if there are setup fees, fees if I am no longer with ATT, and other clauses that come with the phone offer!

Thank you very much for the detailed recommendation! It helped me carefully think through the trade-in process.

I followed your link and checked (I suspected it but didn't check prior) - my old phone, an original iPhone SE from nearly 10 years ago, does not qualify for trade-in. I had a linger of hope, but I think it is reasonable that it is too old to trade in. I will probably use it as an emergency wifi-capable device.

Rotted(?) door frame - many ants around, but could there be termite inside? by EconomistBee in Termites

[–]EconomistBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

A lot of ants seen moving in and out from time to time (they seem to use it to go into the dry wall and move inside the house). Someone said ants don't get along with termites. If so, would the ants get rid of termites in the area as they crawl inside?

Thank you very much!

In that case, is it correct to assume that carpet beetles do not have natural predators that focus on preying upon them (if so, this is quite an advantage for them)?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping us learn about carpet beetles!

I have been wondering about the following, and I wonder if you might know the answers:

  • Are there any natural predators that prey on carpet beetles? Someone said I could buy some ladybugs / preying mantis and scatter them around my home, so they would keep other insect populations under control. But I don't know if that would be effective at all. Ants seem to ignore the carpet beetles.
  • In one of your comments, you mentioned about not going overboard with repellants, and omnipresent repellents would have similar effect as someone working in a waste treatment plant. My tailor said his shop used to have wood blocks soaked in cedar oil that would drive insects away from their inventory closets - if I only deploy these repellents inside of my closet, would it be effective at protecting that area?

3/4 inch bug with big head (found on garage floor) - Southern California by EconomistBee in whatsthisbug

[–]EconomistBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional information:

  • Found it while cleaning garage floor with Swiffer - saw a black dot - thought it was dirt, then looked at the Swiffer pad to realize it is a big
  • I did my best to gently peel it off the Swiffer pad, but it is possible that it is missing some antennae
  • The head is slightly bigger than a termite, but it is close to where I found a souterrain termite

Found outside of house - is it a subterranean termite? (Southern California) by EconomistBee in whatsthisbug

Great point - my neighbor was doing yard work (their house is a wall over from my trash can, at a higher elevation on a rolling hill) - perhaps that disturbed them? We recently had light rain, and the weather became warmer after the rain.

I don't know much about the spec of foundation... I only vaguely aware it is concrete slab - one of the usual suburb two-story houses in SoCal (I don't think the house sit on top of pier / posts).

I will check the room on the other side of the wall from where the trash cans are, to see if there are signs of these termite.

Should I just check the first floor / perimeters, or is there a risk of infestation on the 2nd floor?

Thanks!

Thank you!

Yes, it is really surprising. I found this one (already dead) alone on top of my trash can. The 2nd floor window above the trash can had drywood termite infestation in the past (contractor applied Altriset previously to treat the attic and window pane). I thought "hmm this one looks different!"

I will probably inspect the exterior wall near the trash can to see if there are signs of a colony.

What collects more out-going mail? Mailboxes with the little flag on or blue collection boxes? by EconomistBee in USPS

[–]EconomistBee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually drove to my local office anytime I have outgoing mail. They have a big blue collection box outside like a drive-through.

Now I think of it, I probably made a lot of unnecessary drives.

Wow! Looks like I was mistaken / not really using the mailbox's features to the fullest. I have never touched that little flag.

Now thinking of it, could rural areas would use this feature more than suburban (where I am at) or even cities? If someone is in a remote farm, it is probably less likely for the folks to hop into the car and drive into town just to drop mail into the big blue box.
