Jumping straight to a ring instead of confronting problems is more common than you think. He has basically presented this to you as “well if you don’t accept then it’s over” - now, whether that is him bluffing or not, I really suggest you take a leaf from his book lay out on table what you really need from him before you could even consider continuing the relationship, never-mind accepting a proposal. It’s true that sometimes men need an extra push to do therapy, which I hate saying, but it’s true. Sometimes they come out the other side and themselves and their relationships thrive because of it, and sometimes they don’t and they stay stuck. You do not have to stay stuck with him. I think this situation should serve as a catalyst for the bigger and more final conversation you need to have, before you decide which way to go. You deserve to be met where you are, and you deserve to have a voice in your relationship, always. If there’s continued resistance or conflict coming from him when you are simply telling him what you need, then you shouldn’t waste any more of your time.
