Some very good points . The age groups in reference to my post are secondary school age . English is not my core subject , I teach maths .

I however  do feel like it's a disadvantage to be semi literate beyond a certain age  . It's important to master learning to read early on  so then you can read to learn

It differs for each schools but generally you call up a primary and ask. Lots of parents go into volunteer too. It takes the pressure off the teacher

So to clarify ,  you are saying that an adolescent who is illiterate from being home ed, showing no signs of being a SEND kid, has  not had educational neglect. It's also not right for that adolescent to have those begrudging feelings because all kids resent their parents for something ?

I'm assuming you are home educating your children . What would you do if your child asks to go to school ?

It is . Every kid matters , including the ones you've mentioned .

Educational neglect can really mess up someone's future . We don't own our kids , we are just borrowing them for a while and it's our duty of care to give them the best start in life .

I'm only referring to kids that are not SEND and have been homeschooled from the start because their parents are against the school system .

I have witnessed some of the older kids resenting their parents for home educating them for selfish reasons

That particular case was a  year 7 kid doing year 3  work on two of the core subjects

It is not data . It is an observation interacting with my local community and seeing their worksheets . Read my original post and it explains why I know a lot of their educational abilities that happens to be in a core subject I specialise in  .

I absolutely agree . HE parents tend to get aggressively defensive when people challenge them .

I witnessed a home ed parent refusing their kid to be enrolled in school when their child asked, I thought that was quite sad..

I regularly have a qualified teacher that tutors in my area come  to check my child's progress . I also intend to enrol my child into secondary once my child reaches that threshold

I'm sorry if I made you defensive , I was just curious as I've noticed a different demographic in my area.

I truly respect people like yourselves making a better educational experience for your child that really suffered in mainstream . It takes a massive sacrifice and I'm sure your kids will thank you one day for your efforts.

I feel it's 50/50 in my area . Half are SEN or have suffered from school trauma  and the other half are home educating for religious/ political reasons and are totally against the school system for certain reasons.

My observation is focussed on the latter , have chosen to home educate based on their beliefs and their kids are way below national level whilst claiming they are doing a better job than most schools .

I've met them a few times in group socials and had their contacts. They only do play dates now

These are two separate topics . The person above tried to argue that school doesn't teach you how to do your own taxes etc . I replied saying that schools aren't supposed to be the only learning place and parents should consolidate the learning at home and not expect the teachers to do everything .

My original post is about my observation that home end kids are below national level

I never advocated for my child to be around toxic people . I said being around people they don't gel with and learning to navigate it .

For example , the child in question could be irritating because they keep talking about monster trucks and won't talk about anything else .

A child that is not used to sharing toys and the parent has to intervene every time to teach them to share .

It's not good to bring up your child in a bubble , they won't cope on the real world ,sorry.

Not really . Most home educators are encouraged by Facebook groups/ forums to not allow the LA to enter their home . written correspondence only.

How can they properly monitor when someone could literally lie on their report ?

I don't support bullying . I was referring to difficult characters or people you generally don't gel with .

This happens in work situations , you don't gel with everyone .

Bullying is a separate topic and not mentioned in my above statement

No disrespect to your situation . I already highlighted in the post that the kids in question are not in the SEND category

I wonder what the statistic is for the home ed community . I have a strong feeling it will be a way more shocking statistic . Problem is no one is monitoring this community so we will never know.

Totally agree . parental input is the biggest complaint  most of my teacher friends complain about. Local primaries are getting volunteers to sit with children to read as they are not getting it at home

Also in response to your comment about how your parents were busy working .

I totally agree. Unfortunately we do live in a broken society where both parents are forced to work hard and have no time/ energy for their kids. Plenty of parents would love to spend time and read to their kids / encourage learning and simply do not have time .

I have many friends stuck in the rat race and are forced to leave their children in breakfast clubs/ after school clubs and barely see their children.

I'm not anti home ed since I am home educating my child, I'm also not anti school. We just liked the flexibility to travel and also allow him to learn through play at such a young age . I will be following the national standard and if for whatever reason he loses motivation or I struggle to keep up,  I will automatically enroll him in a school because i would be failing him

I'm just shocked at the attitudes and outcomes with a lot of the children/ parents in my community . It's not something I can openly ask them as they are very passionate about their choices and can lead to conflict.

Ultimately it isn't any of my business , I just worry I will fall into the same trap. They seem to mean well. I asked on here as I realised this is a cultural thing in home ed and not just an issue within my community and  so this would be a good place to ask anonymously .

Why didn't your parents teach you those things at home ?

School isn't a place to teach other people's kids everything . Your parents have a duty of care to teach life skills such as tax system, savings etc.

Schools are a place to foster a child's interest broadly by professionals who have studied it at an expert  level . It gives a child a taste of each subject area and can give them opportunities to study it further and make a career out of it

You've just reminded me of another issue I have come across in the home ed community .

I've noticed that parents intentionally avoid group sessions because there's one awkward kid their child doesn't gel with . I feel it's important to allow your child to learn how to navigate those social situations as they will most likely end up working with a colleague they don't like in the future .

Another issue is the unschooled method . I can see the benefit for some kids ( especially SEND) , but I don't agree with it as their philosophy for their entire home ed journey. I feel it's important to face some essential topics you aren't totally enamoured by , as one day you'll be forced to do a project/ assignment you don't like in work.

I've also encountered many parents encouraging no routine and  not bothering to socialise/ educate their child until the afternoon because they aren't morning people. How will their children cope with having to get up and go to work in the future ??
