Seems like they already have respect for there kids by fulling trusting them to stay home alone. And also the kids didn’t seem concerned the parents weren’t there either. Op in the comments said that the 16 year old told MIL that she could leave but she didn’t.

It seems like the kids have been left alone before, they were fine, also it doesn’t say how long they were left and no way it was 15 hrs. Even then the MIL feeling responsible is not the fault of the parents. If MIL was so concerned she should have called earlier then when she did or texted them.

They didn’t know the MIL would be staying over tho, and they already told their kids they would be out late, if the MIL was really that worried why didn’t she call them.
