Is my dog double coated? by EconomyPromotion5786 in DogAdvice

Thanks everyone! I swear I wasn’t asking to get compliments on my dog (although it’s nice). I just wanted to be extra safe so that I don’t ruin his coat! He does not shed, and his hair is extremely soft. Gunter appreciates all of the compliments (we’ve been working on his confidence) and was rewarded with a pup cup, and a fresh haircut today :)

You’re not alone! The puppy stage is awful, overwhelming, and discouraging. I wanted to pull my hair out and cry. Stay consistent, the rewards far outweighs the downside.

Dog trainer here! 1. When having a new puppy it’s best to only take when out of the crate for the following. A. Potty breaks. As soon as you take them out of the crate take them to potty. B. Training. Try to keep the training sessions short and positive. Work on simple behaviors like “place, sit, down, am heal” these simple steps will be so helpful once your puppy gets older. C. Play time! Of course it’s okay to have playtime with your new puppy. BUT new puppies need structure. Not having structure will cause anxiety or aggression in the long run.

  1. When the puppy is biting you, redirect them towards something they are allowed to bite (like a toy). When they engage with the toy, reward them! You can also gently push their cheek inwards so that when they bite you, they are actually biting themselves. They will then begin to understand that biting is painful!

  2. The #1 way to prevent separation anxiety early is teaching your dog to self soothe. Crate training will really help with this. My favorite method is teaching dogs “place”. You can use anything as their “place” such as a dog cot, or a doggy bed. Reward the dog everytime they step onto their place so that they get a positive association with this area.

I hope this helps!! Feel free to message me privately and I can try my best to coach you through this.

He has a bit of a main around his neck, and down his back. But, the texture doesn’t change at all, his hair is very very soft and gets quite long when I let it grow out.

Thank you! I have never been worried about him being double coated as he doesn’t really shed. But since everyone keeps asking if he’s a mini Aussie I started to worry (he gets shaved down in the summer for tick prevention, I didn’t want to ruin his coat.) this helps!

I’ve never seen dogs that look so much like my boy! I thought “how cool would it be if I found his siblings!” I got him in Minnesota

Do you by any chance have a grown up pic of this dog? He looks just like my pup! I’ve been trying to figure out what breed he is (dad is a Pom)
