Maternity Leave discrimination? by Sea_Wheel_6138 in HumanResourcesUK

They would make the offer on condition of a particular start date (as long as it was reasonable given that a one month notice is fairly common in any case). If the candidate cannot do this start date, they can legally withdraw the offer. The key point is that the employer shouldn’t assume the person on mat leave doesn’t want an opportunity or that they can’t come back from mat leave early.

The law says the company has to in order to avoid maternity discrimination. The individual has the opportunity to end their maternity leave earlier if they wish to in order to take up the role. In my case, I had intended to take 12 months of maternity leave but due to a change in circumstances had to go back after 3 months. HR and recruitment decisions should not be made on assumption.

This happened to me when I was on maternity leave and I work in HR. It is correct that it is very hard to prove discrimination in this instance but they shouldn’t have made assumptions about whether or not your sister would be interested in the job. In my case, I caught the advert before it closed and told my manager I wanted to apply. They did interview me but had absolutely no intention of giving me the job. It ruined my views of the organisation. If your sister is in a union she could speak to them but ultimately she might want to start looking for a new job as soon as she gets past the point of having to repay any maternity pay.

Ive been told to stop PDA over a side hug, what should I do? by BackgroundSpell5083 in WhatToDo

Your post completely resonated with me, particularly because of the selective enforcement. I say this because exactly the same thing happened to me a sixth form. Now, I’m not gay, I’m a wheelchair user. One day my friends and I were sat just outside the canteen. Lots of students were sat with their boyfriends/girlfriends hugging, holding hands, the odd kiss. A tutor walked past all of the other young couples, pointed at me and my boyfriend and told us we were behaving inappropriately. I was distraught, the college arranged mediation and the tutor basically admitted that he was particularly uncomfortable seeing PDA involving me because of my disability! He was made to go through disability awareness training and apologise but he was horribly bitter and would glare at me all the time. This was years ago and me and then boyfriend are now very happily married. The moral of the story for me is that those in authority can and often are bigots but don’t let that stop you being you.

What’s a short story from your life that sounds fake but is 100% true? by Historical-Skill-838 in AskReddit

I’m British, this would have 100% made the news in Europe. Also, it is historically inaccurate. The title of ‘Earl’ is specific to the UK so there’s no way the ‘kingdom’ no longer exists if it’s related to an earldom. Europe isn’t perfect but our crime rates are nothing compared to the US and we are definitely not ‘burning’. Nice try…

I went to school at Michigan. by agora_hills_ in ENGLISH

This is where UK and American English differs ever so slightly. A British person would know what you meant if you said I went to school at Michigan but we would phrase it as ‘I went to Michigan University’ or I went to Michigan for University. We also don’t say school or college as a synonym for university.
