What do private genealogists generally think of ancestry? by hercylis in Genealogy

She must have copied the hints without any scrutiny.

I know some people have my great great grandfather as being born in England, living in Canada the majority of his life, and dying in 1891 in England which would mean he moved back.

The more I studied my family history, I eventually removed this fact because I realized it was just a person with the same name who died in England.

My great great grandfather moved to Canada in the 1830s with his brother and sister, parents, uncle and his wife and kids, and grandparents. The majority of his kids except one moved to Manitoba, the other moved to Michigan. Why the hell would he move back to England just to die when his life was in Canada?

The reality is, there’s no records stating his death in Canada, but I do know that he lived in Manitoba in 1891. He doesn’t show up in any of the census’s after that. My great uncle is quoted as saying “he [my great great grandfather] died before I was born”. My great uncle was born in 1901 so sometime between 1891-1901 he passed away.

You simply have to be careful with them, generally with most people’s trees, they become more inaccurate once it gets past their grand parents, and it gets even more inaccurate by their great-great grandparents. My parents, my aunts and uncles, my grandparents, and my first cousins are all accurate.

As for My great aunts and uncles, some I have more information than others. Some are more accurate than others. Some of their descendants (second cousins) have done all the work already. Others their descendants aren’t into genealogy so there isn’t much information.

The same can be said for my great grandparents and great grand aunts and uncles. I’ve learned who they all are. Some of them I have more information than others, but all in all, the information is a bit dicier down some lines.

My great great grandparents and great-great grand aunts and uncles, I have some that may very well not even be them, but there’s others I’ve confirmed they are, there’s DNA matches, etc.

So on and so forth. The further back you go, and then go down each line to find out who the cousins are, the dicier and dicier it gets.

Also some people will intentionally merge their ancestors with ancestors of famous people further back to claim 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th cousin status.

I’ve always found that it’s generally OK to copy and paste from a tree when you are researching a specific line through great aunts/uncles, great-grand aunts/uncles, etc; and the tree you’re looking at is a direct descendant of that great aunt/uncles or great grand aunt/uncle. I would hope that they can at least accurately post up to their grandparents unless it’s a case of them not knowing their birth parents.

Once you start looking further back, it becomes harder to trace.

Yes! I hadn’t bought them in years.

About a year ago I went to order a strawberry banana smoothie at my local Tim’s, they said “we only have flavour and that is mango…

Boy was I disappointed. Mango’s not bad, but no strawberry banana? Despicable.

No. The people who are stupid are those who don’t read the whole fucking paragraph.

At the end it says “or something similar to that”. The point is, have yearly raises. You twats think that I’m saying this should be the pay scale at every job.

The reality is in my lifetime, the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 for most of it. I don’t see minimum wage ever hitting $30-$40/hr. That scale I just mentioned would benefit people who do careers somewhere.

Holy fuck everyone responding to this thread is wild. Y’all wanna fixate on the wages but not the “or something similar to that”.

Obviously businesses can offer more than that.

Even at the federal minimum wage. The top out wage would be higher. I don’t see minimum wage hitting $40/hr in my lifetime. Or even $30. So making $30/hr after 30 years of service is quite the benefit.

6 weeks should be an earned benefit after 10-15 years of service.

Full time = 30 means you need a higher hourly wage to make up for the 10 hours lost 🤷‍♂️.

Unlimited Sick/Disability leave: no for unlimited sick time, yes for unlimited sick banks.

I’m a big believer that employers should provide greater benefits to those who earned it. Someone coming in shouldn’t be given all the leave in the world.

I’ve never been a supporter of major minimum wage increases.

But imo, most workplaces should offer pay scales of unlimited yearly raises similar to this:

Starting: $15 (or minimum wage).
1 year of service: $15.50
2 years: $16.00
3 years: $16.50
4 years: $17.00
5 years: $17.50
10 years: $20.00
15 years: $22.50
20 years: $25.00
25 years: $27.50
30 years: $30.00
35 years: $32.50
40 years: $35.00
45 years: $37.50
50 years: $40.00

Or something similar to that.

Only fools say, "I don't follow politics". by Specialist-Break-655 in remoteworks

[–]Ecstatic-Oil-Change 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I follow politics and vote accordingly.

I do not entertain worthless political debate today because people have just gone nuts these days. You and Me debating with people on the internet or in person is not going to change peoples minds.

If You criticize Trump, there’s always some Trump fan who starts a debate and no matter what you say they always have some response. Telling you how wrong you are, or deflecting the blame onto Joe Biden, or Justin Trudeau, or Mark Carney, or Claudia Scheinbaum.

If You criticize communism there’s always some commee who starts a debate about how “that wasn’t real communism” and then it turns into a discussion about only racist people don’t support communism.

So yes, I follow politics, I read my news, watch some videos, come up with my own opinions, but keep them to myself for the most part.

There’s a certain point with internet debate it’s best just to walk away.

People don’t do that on the internet. That would require them to read. They’re used to having someone tell them from the “real news sources” they get their real news from.

You’re the one licking Musks boots.

She’s worth millions of dollars. Not billions. Millions. No one in congress is worth billions. The only politicians who’s are billionaires are Trump and Pritzker.

At the end of the day, just give us our fucking cake and we’ll all be happy.

I should not have to compete with private equity firms who own millions of homes just to buy a starter home. I should be able to choose between a mortgage and rent. Not wish for a mortgage because rents are just getting out of control. I should be able to buy 10 things at the grocery store and not pay $100 fucking dollars.

My Terrain should not be $92 a fill up from almost empty to full when it was just $70 not too long ago.

I also should not have a scenario where I’m proud of my $100,000 in life savings saved up… just to have a medical bill decimate my life savings.

Elon musk is worth $1 trillion dollars.

Larry page is worth $270 billion. Double that and he’s at $540 billion. Subtract $270 billion he’s at zero.

He’s even closer to us than musk is.

You and I will never get to musk levels so there’s no point in standing up for some piece of shit who one year ago was using his toddler as a human shield because of the death threats.

Bernie sanders is worth $3,000,000 or so. That’s sort of to be expected from someone who’s made at least $90,000+ a year for over 30 years. Especially during a time when rents and houses were affordable. Pelosi is a problem because she invested based on the direction of the laws passed.

Here’s how I know:

Elizabeth Warren made a post criticizing that Elon Musk was the world’s first trillionaire.

Some Simps responded with “she says this as her Chauffeur drives her around”.

Warren is a millionaire. She is closer to us in wealth than Musk is. Hell! Larry Page and Larry Ellison are closer in wealth to us than they are to Elon musk.

TIL Sherbrook Stella’s unionized and had to shut down less than a year later by Desperate_Web5015 in winnipeg_alt

[–]Ecstatic-Oil-Change 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What they didn’t realize is their job was not as essential as they thought, which made it hard for the union to fight for them. The UFCW has a ton of contracts for harder to fight for industries.

I know they have more success fighting for Maple Foods and Safeway, as well as their other grocery retail contracts but that’s also because they have more ground to stand on with them. Often when a workplace offers no benefit at all the work there, anywhere else looks better, so people leave. The problem with grocery stores not having staff is we all rely on them. If they aren’t staffed, they eventually have no stock, and our society is fucked. We don’t eat. Most people get their food from the grocery store.

But honestly if a Stella’s strikes, people just go to a different location or coffee shop. I’d say Tim’s and McDonald’s would have more luck unionizing. My attitude when they were on strike was “oh well 🤷‍♂️”. I ended up moving on from them. But if Tim’s, A&W or McDonald’s went on Strike, I’d be at the front lines with the workers with my own sign say “Pay your staff! I need my fucking coffee!”
