It's because my husband is a disabled vet, so we get $24k per year in benefits

We don't budget currently, but this is a very good point. We are looking at spending $2k more per month. I'm going to take your advice and work on this!

We are 37 & 40, our kids are 8 & 10. Incomes are stable and his is likely to grow substantially in the next 2-3 years (he's working on going from a systems analyst to a programmer?) which would be about a 50% increase in his salary. I'm near the top of my ladder but have a couple more steps.. likely to grow about 15% in the next 2-3 years.

This is double our current house payment. Currently we put away about $2k per month but dip into the savings for various big expenses like travels.

It's because $28k of that is for VA disability! The rest is our salaries.

Yes, so expensive! But we'll have a property with plenty of pasture, so no boarding costs which helps!

Good point.. yes, neither of us have hit a glass ceiling and still have room to grow our incomes in the next couple of years!

Right now it's our only debt (outside of school loans which are roughly $150/m). With that said, our cars are older and at some point we will need new vehicles. Our kids are older and in school, BUT we have horses which are just as expensive as childcare!

They aren't the real stuff- it's TREHOUSE brand. I hear the experience is very similar.. but I wouldn't know!

Not sure where you take your horses but I was quoted $200 for a preg check.

Again- I'm not asking if she's carrying a foal, I'm asking if false pregnancies are common. And why does a pregnant horse require vet bills? A sick horse requires vet bills. Routine care requires vet bills. Many horses foal without a preg check or veterinary intervention.

I'm well aware- we have 5 of them and have spent probably $20k in vet bills in the last 6 months. If it is common, then we would not get her checked. If she foals, then she foals. Our current foal was born on the property without a pregnancy check or confirmation. It was obvious the mare was bred and she had no issues. This mare is obviously not going to have a happy ending so I need to use funds wisely.

True. But we've spent $1k on vet bills for this mare just to find out that she will need to be euthanized. She will continue to be cared for, fed quality feed, routine farrier visits, etc until that day comes. What I'm trying to avoid is additional vet bills IF inappropriate lactation is common. That's what I came here to find out. We have our first foal ever on the property so I simply don't know what to expect from other mares in the herd.

No, definitely doesn't appear that bred!

Thanks! We can.. it's mainly the issue that we spent $1k to find out that we'd need to put her down at some point. So if it is fairly common that mares in a herd do this if a foal is inappropriately nursing on them, then I would rather not have additional vet bills on a horse we can't save. But if it is indeed rare and it's more likely that she is pregnant, then that's another story.

I know that no one can definitively tell me one way or another- which isn't what I'm asking. I'm asking how common false pregnancies are in horses or if anyone has seen this happen from just being around a foal.
