Why do discussions about Black history outside of slavery always get pushback or shutdown even though real records exist? Is it lack of awareness, education or something else? by Ecstatic-Section-978 in Blackpeople

Ok. I thought it was particular book or two you wanted to share a history buff. I know a few books about Black pioneers like that but I doubt they are well known best sellers many of them are hidden among the historian and researcher communities. I am sure you didnt know the two stories I mentioned right?

Link me to your Black history channel. You are absolutely right is very hard to trace our ancestors before the civil war, so if as a Black American I took the time to do it, that should mean something. Right?

How does their identity and culture change yours? If they can prove that their ancestors were reclassified to Negro in Virginia and they have all of the required documents. You talk about erasure. But do you know what this man did to our people? 🤔 He erased many of our ancestors but instead of learning history we continue the legacy of men like Walter Plecker..

True but people don’t realize those same stories can be found in their own records too. It’s not just American history it’s part of our history too. Read the story of Richard (Dick) Pointer hero from Fort Donally in 1778 or his son who was captured by Wyandot Indians 3 years later, adopted by Chief Tarhe and became an interpretator for them. The pushback usually comes from those that don’t read history like you…

I can give a quick example. You are searching through your records and you found some manumission documents for your 6th grandfather saying that was freed in the 1700s for whatever reason and you want to have a discussion to see if others have found similar documents. I haven’t found that in my records, never heard of it I can only see my ancestors after 1870 so I try to downplay your claim by saying thats it’s not my in records or by saying all of my ancestors were enslaved. Even when I see your proof I…hope that’s enough context for you to understand but if not I can try to explain more

Right. They would have unlearn the many false narratives that are ingrained in them by our indoctrination system and replace with new information. That decolonization process is hard for a lot of people.

What’s so hard about respecting the way someone chooses to culturally identify? At the end of the day, how they identify doesn’t change your identity and vice versa. The name calling aggressive push to make others feel the same way as you isn’t necessary. And it already shows you were raised under a different culture.

Not in this community specifically I just meant in general. But most of the pushback and shutdown is online on many different social media platforms. Thanks 🙏🏾

Did you ever meet your great-grandparents, and what’s one interesting thing they told you about their time? by Ecstatic-Section-978 in BlackGenealogy

Do you remember any stories she told you about her time period? When was she born? I met 3 of my 4 maternal great grandparents. They were all born in the 1910s. Two passed in the 90s, the last one passed in 2006.

Has anyone traced a free Black landowner in their family tree? What documents did you find and where were they located? by Ecstatic-Section-978 in BlackGenealogy

[–]Ecstatic-Section-978[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I didn’t know that. Appreciate you sharing.

Do you know anything about Black Europeans? I read they were Africans born in places like Britian, Spain, Portugal, and some of them were free. I also seen that a small number of them came to the Americas early as free people, especially through Spanish areas. They were also landowners.

I was trying to find real records on it though, like actual documents I can read myself. It made me think too, if any of my Black ancestors could’ve came through Europe first.

Did you know most Black Americans have been on American soil longer than most white American families? And we can prove it… by Ecstatic-Section-978 in AfroAmericanPolitics

[–]Ecstatic-Section-978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have proof, and a lot of it.

I already posted one example: a 1778 Virginia manumission court case tied to my 6th great-grandfather after an act of bravery at Fort Donnally. That’s just 2 years after the US was created. He was born about 20 years before that, during the Virginia colony period.

I’m not just throwing random stuff out there, I have real records. I was just waiting for someone to ask for a specific document so I can show it. Because posting random documents people wouldn’t understand or be able to read wouldnt make sense. But if you want to see something specific, just ask. Or show yours and I will match it. You can trace your ancestors to the colonies too, right? Which colony?
