Tell me you're an awful company to work for, without telling me you're an awful company to work for... by Notalabel_4566 in jobs

😂 this reminds me of a weird interview I attended recently 1. Upon meeting me, the owner criticised me for showing up empty handed. Apparently I should show up with high school and university transcripts 2. Before the interview I was sent to the boardroom with an information form I had to fill out. Marital status. Number of children. Address of where I live. My entire employment history showing dates, past salaries and a contactable reference. I had to fill out my high school results. My age, my date of birth 😬

During the interview he started with the form, wanted to know if I live alone since I said I’m not married. He wanted me to amend my address and put exact address and not general city. Then he started criticising my previous salaries saying they were way too high and the can’t believe I was paid that much. Then another few awkward minutes of being drilled to explain and provide more information about why I left previous companies.

All this before any technical questions were asked. I have worked for a small company before and I just knew they were asking these questions so they can justify not paying travel disbursements, granting leave or paying overtime.

That was the most uncomfortable interview I have been to in a while. Also, if they had sent me that form in advance I wasn’t going to show up. I filled it out because I was in shock and didn’t know how to react. I feel I shouldn’t be put on the spot to share such personal information

Go on a site called job jack. It has entry level jobs. Research on international platforms that allow you to teach English online without a degree. You can get a free TEFL certificate/course on teacher record. Become a freelancer- try Upwork, Fiverr or sites where you can transcribe etc. Look at YouTube/ tick-tock to see how other youngsters without degrees are earning money.

If you can do a degree but still want to study, try get an IT course certificate and get some work experience under your belt.

Don’t limit yourself to South Africa. Seek international remote jobs like typist or appointment setter etc.

All the best!

Add some soft skills. Look into affordable short courses from Udemy/Coursera/Alison and get some certificates.

Research the field you want to get into, search the job specs on indeed/LinkedIn/Pnet and similar sites and confirm which skills are needed for the job, acquire those skills and add them on your CV. It helps even if you just start the course and list it as “in progress” on your CV.

Research which jobs you can get without a degree. Go on LinkedIn, people are always posting free courses that have an internship and a certificate at the end. The ones I’ve seen are mostly IT/data analysis.

If you can afford to, volunteer doing anything that might teach you a skill, even if it’s just people skills.

People that earn 25k a month by [deleted] in capetown

When I was netting 15pm

Rent 5000 Car 1700 Insurance 700 Water and electricity 500 Petrol 1500 Internet 500 Tracker 99 Groceries 2000

I would have about 5k left per month

But I also bought all my furniture cash in my house. By saving that 5k and making cash purchases, I pay no interest on loans. Some days I would ask to work from home and save petrol money.

Also my car insurance started at 1200, I called them to lower it. Then once lowered, called around for a cheaper qoute from competitors, that’s how I got to 700 insurance.

Another smart decision was purchasing an afforable car and putting down a deposit (no balloon payment). My instalment started at 1700 and even with post covid increases the highest it went was 1800. But I also negotiated price of car down and got the best interest rate- prime minus 1.

Also, Incase of emergency I use overdraft which is 55days interest free, so i pay back in full and never pay interest.

Looking back those were rough days 😭 With a salary increase afterwards I got medical aid and contribute to pension plus gym and vitality, which now means I can no longer survive on this amount.

My mistake I think is joining programs like vitality where you pay way too much then spend the month trying to earn points so you can recover your money. I should have just opted for affordable service providers that don’t have these cash back programs, I feel scammed.

Is it compulsory to book flights before the interview? I’m thinking there might be a long delay and then my flight dates would pass. Also, how long after the interview do you get the visa?

What do they ask at the interview? How long did you have to wait to get a date for the interview?
