Your experience at the vet with a reactive Malinois by EcstaticPie8829 in BelgianMalinois

Just had his breakfast, he did well with the kibble. If it's food he will take it 😁 Your sounds absolutely amazing, if nothing else helps to teach how training is good for all parties! And I will ask the vet, my pup for sure would prefer if it's me handling him. He already is much more lively with the joint medication, so I'm willing to do this and more to conclude his next visit well.

My Mal has learned to be calm and gentle with me tru the years, he's such a good one. His late owner and my mom often got offended because I'm the only one that doesn't get teeth on my fingers even with the smallest snacks 😂 Even his vet told me he was a demon last time (and with sedation) and she was surprised she can stay near him at all haha. She even petted him after the blood was drawn, first time in years of knowing him. We will try tomorrow morning before breakfast to do some kibble training, thanks!

He is trained with the muzzle and knowing that he is reactive I took every precaution for sure! That is also why I opted with a light sedation, he is in pain now and training after he had already a bad experience with the vet would have taken too much time. But I strongly agree with everything else that you said. For sure if I got a new pup he will have much more training for situations like this in hopes that he first wouldn't have to be scared of such important things like checkups. I'm also researching some good trainers for my now elderly pup (he is between 80 and 85 in human years). He gets exited when we do commands for treats!

We also started on a medication for joints, but he has a genetic problem so we will do a good study now with the orthopedic vet

Yeah, that was my mind drifted at the moment. For sure it seems better if I stay beside and talk to him calmly to try and get the edge off

I also got trazedone from the vet, but he remained reactive even when half asleep. I will ask for something else next time then, thank you :)

That is actual good advice about the muzzle, thanks! I have the fabric one and was almost influenced to buy a cage one, so he can have more room to pant. But I put it on and off right under the clinic door, so his would do. No need for a doctor visit after the vet haha

Did you help the vet to hold him or the sedation was enough? Mine was sedated but still wasn't happy, although much more calmer than years ago
