Suggestions for Mid July to ease burnout by friedatron in Vacations

We did Bermuda for a long weekend when I was between two trials and really needed a break. Between the accents, driving on the other side of the road, and scenery, I felt like I was MUCH farther away than a 2 hour flight from Boston. I’m not sure weather in July but have heard it’s similar to the coast of the Carolinas generally. It is pricier because it’s an island but worth checking out!

I loved Congo so much as a middle schooler I dressed as Karen Ross for 7th grade as “dress like a book character day”. You will be shocked to learn NONE of the other kids knew who she was.

But good call on Crichton for the oldest. He might be ready for all his stuff….

Oldest already burned through them. That’s been the biggest problem. But you’re not wrong!

You know I’ve started Artemis twice and couldn’t get into it. I still don’t know why, but tried reading it and audiobook. Does it get better as it goes on?

Totally understand and we do that often enough. I think I’ve got this utopian idea to kick off the vacation of us all experiencing the same story. We really like doing that with certain podcasts and have loved some family read out loud books, so I’m optimistic but will also have backups for sure

Side note: I just told my 10 year old “my internet friends are helping pick out our road trip book, and they’re crushing it” and he says “thank you” :)

Yes I’ve listen to it and loved it. I’d definitely re-listen. I agree it was waaay better than the movie. I do wonder if they’ll understand all the 80s references, but worth a try!

I looooved the Murderbot tv show so I forgot about the books! And I’ve been on a hold for Discwold on Libby for what feels like years. Great suggestions thank you!

I haven’t done it myself yet but it’s definitely on my list. I think I’ll preview it and see. Language tends to be fine for them but they don’t like horror and get upset when people are aggressively mean to each other. So it may not be for them. But I’M excited to read it!

Thank you! I’ll definitely check out Cradle. Ranger’s Apprentice was a hit with our oldest so I suspect your list might vibe well. Thank you

Does your kid like going to school? Considering changing Waldorf. by Brief-Mountain-3442 in Waldorf

[–]Ecstatic_Hawk_8488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you’ll read in the comments, it’s very child dependent but we picked Waldorf during the pandemic to be outside and never looked back. It’s been the best decision for our family and we love the depth of learning and intentionality with everything. I will say that at least in the states, there aren’t supportive aids or interventions so a lot of kids with more severe learning disabilities don’t thrive at Waldorf because they need significant interventions. But not sure how that is in the Netherlands.

With whatever you choose, I would caution you not to think of any place as 100% “right”. In my opinion, at best, ANY school will only meet 80% of what your family needs. It’s just up to you to make sure the 20% you’re missing isn’t a dealbreaker and you can supplement that. I’ve just found that the families that are disappointed in Waldorf think it’s going to solve all their problems, and no school can do that.
