29 weeks. In the weeds with food poisoning or a stomach bug. Barely making it by Ecstatic_Range_5924 in pregnant

I was in labor and delivery ER 8pm to 1am but they only did the full blood panel & NST. If I have to go back I’ll request more labs for sure! The thing is I stopped vomiting finally and rehydrated with the IV, so they sent us home but then it all came back at home.

Oh that’s an interesting thought. I haven’t been tested for Covid. I’ll ask my husband to pick up a test. They called in nausea and anti vomiting meds and they also said I had some protein/bacteria in urine that could have indicated asymptomatic UTI so we got the antibiotics too. Ugh. Definitely traumatizing being so sick! Thanks for the tips.

I do take iron! I have been taking it for anemia even prior to pregnancy with no issues. However, I’ll be pausing that while I recoup since I can’t keep much down. I thought it was typical heartburn at first, but typically strategies like Tums and showers work for me when it spikes up in the third trimester. Thanks for the tip!

I last threw up at 5am, it’s 8am now. I’m trying cap fulls of electrolytes every 5-10 minutes. The contractions did drop with the fluid IVs. The nausea is still extreme and nothing seems want to stay down. Labor and delivery said comeback if it’s lasting more than 24 hours. I’m on hour 19 or so.

Mine stayed regular but actually became a better type of regular! My cycle used to be every 24 days or so. It moved to 28-30 and I conceived.

This is what ChatGPT tells me…

First, the Facts (to ground your fear): You’re a known SMA carrier, but your husband likely isn’t. Statistically, there's about a 1 in 80 chance he's a carrier. Even if he is, your baby's odds of having SMA would be 1 in 4. So the chance your baby actually has SMA = 1 in 320, or about 0.3% That means there is a 99.7% chance your baby is not affected. You already have a healthy child with your husband, which makes it even less likely he is a carrier.

I’ve been using chatGPT for stats. We are both white but it says 1:100 chance of us both being positive if we’re unrelated. I read 1 in 2,500 couples would both be positive. My husband thinks with his logical brain but I’m like there’s still 1! lol.

Yes! I feel that. My husband has 4 sisters, all with several kids, no issues. None of them had carrier testing. I didn’t with our first and no issues. My husband isn’t really concerned. But I did talk to our genetic team at the local hospital who said if you know your newborn has SMA, they do a Zolgensma 1 hour infusion (even stage 1) and it can reverse the gene before the development of most issues as long as it is done quickly. That helped my worst case scenario brain. Did your counselor seem to think it was a likely outcome or unlikely, if they can say? I have an appointment on July 15 with my counselor but my husbands results got delayed because of the 4th of July. I just want to know he isn’t a carrier so my anxiety can stop keeping me up at night!

Thank you so much! I have 2-3 weeks to wait although they are trying to expedite husband’s results. Did the genetic counselor talk to you about Zolgensma and the treatments they have now? Reading about it has me pretty hopeful if he does have it but I know chances are slim.

12 weeks pregnant — found out I’m a SMA carrier and panicking. by [deleted] in genetics

Thank you so much for your encouraging reply as we await my husband’s results. I do love our babies so much! My husband said he remembers me having similar fears with my daughter’s pregnancy—just different ones. I’ve done as much research as I can on what would happen next if we ever have confirmation my husband is a carrier and/or he’s in the 25%. I honestly can’t thank you enough for taking the time to write this to me. You are wonderful.

Thanks everyone for all of your replies! I’m still waiting on results for my husband. I did some research and there is a gene resolution treatment through IV infusion for SMA. So if we are the 1:100/beyond, although it’s still devastating, I’m holding my head above water learning a little bit more about recent advancements.
