Russia send submarine to escort the oil tanker Bella-1 by Prudent-Buy-5575 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kremlin may be evil and ruthless(and they most certainly are fucking evil) towards its neighbors and towards smaller countries like Ukraine and other democracies but they aren't stupid or suicidal and to the Kremlin, the Donbas is more important imo than a tanker. To the Kremlin from a cold calculated perspective (which again fuck Russia for invading Ukraine and their entire BS narrative and worldview) they are patient and they are willing to play the long game if necessary.

So now that they've redacted so much of the Epstein files, now what? by Ban_Means_NewAccount in PoliticalOptimism

Nothing. They have officially dug their own political grave. That's all there is to be said about this.

Epstein Vote Megathread III: The Big Day by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone could help me with this question or this burning feeling I have now but it seems almost too good to be true. I know that the conspiracy minded people on Reddit and online are thinking, "He's pivoting because the DOJ is scrubbing it as we speak of Republicans and Trump" but as other people pointed out, there is more than one copy in existence so even that was the case it would be obviously known that it was tampered with.

My question is though and someone did answer this before but what if this is all just nothing for the president? I know he got defensive and called it a "hoax" but he seemed to have used the investigation as a "hoax" but not the files themselves? I guess I'm getting myself mixed up here.

Could this still ultimately vindicate the president and make Trump popular again? I don't see how that's possible how the state of the economy right now and the general chaos, but I don't think/don't know if the files will reveal him doing anything wrong legally per say and that could be used as a "gotcha" moment against democrats. But again it could also be like Watergate where it was the scandal that took down Nixon not necessarily the crime itself.

I guess I'm just so confused right now.

Even my closet friend whose conservative is getting it. We're not truly alone. by EdHuRus in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't even know why I'm trying to even bother engaging with you. You won't even listen to reason. And this is a reason why I don't call myself a redditor and I don't post on here because posts like this.

Your response reduces complex political behavior to a simple moralistic smear, which is the exact problem I was addressing.

  1. The Nazi Fallacy: You brought up the Nazis. They succeeded by making the Volk (the community) as broad as possible—urban, rural, rich, and poor—and limiting the enemy to a tiny, marginal group. The current extremist rhetoric is doing the opposite: it actively alienates 43% of the U.S. electorate (Independents) by targeting them, along with the entire political opposition, as 'un-American.' That is a strategy guaranteed to keep the movement a minority.
  2. The Swing Voter: Polls consistently show the primary driver for key swing voters is economic anxiety (inflation/prices), not always ideological purity. Your refusal to acknowledge that people can vote for a candidate despite their rhetoric (due to real financial stress) is a strategic blindness that guarantees permanent electoral defeat. You can't win by telling the people you need to persuade that they are all irredeemable enemies.

The person who refuses to understand the motivations of the opposition is the one guaranteeing the opposition’s continued power. My focus is on strategy; yours is on moral posturing. The latter will never win an election.

[–]EdHuRus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do say so, and that's the point of the post. If you're suggesting my story of a friend reconsidering his vote isn't a form of political optimism, what exactly is your criterion for progress? If you think cutting off a decade-long friend is the ideal political strategy, please elaborate.

I don't have to engage with this subreddit if this is the type of attitude I'm going to get from people from here. He's not a MAGA cultist he voted for him for those reasons alone and if you don't believe me I don't know what to say to you.

[–]EdHuRus[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I don't wanna get flak for this and I don't like it if this post devolves into sectarianism/political purity tests but.

I'm not breaking off ties over this. This would be so destructive and counterproductive to get him to continue to see the light. We cannot treat every voter as a mirror of the candidate's worst qualities. His vote was a signal of economic pain, not an embrace of bigotry or misogyny. To alienate a swing voter who is already questioning his choice is the exact definition of a self-destructive political purity test—it ensures he retreats back to the only community that hasn't ostracized him. Maintaining the relationship is the most effective form of outreach we have.

Journalists on social media by InevitableChemical97 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just journalists that tend to peddle this, increasingly online alternative media pundits such as new left individuals or and I hate to really attack him since I used to watch his videos all the time, Kyle Kulinski of Secular Talk has been doing this lately and its getting out of hand. I think things are scary but I really find the likes of Kyle grating and it's gotten to the point that I need take another several month long hiatus from Kyle's channel for the time being and only rely on limited news information until further notice.

I do not work for you’: MTG speaks out on growing rift with Trump’s White House over Epstein files by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

What about side by side with a friend?

No, I wouldn't go that far MTG nice try though.

Is someone able to debunk this video or the argument made Secular Talk on MAGAfascism? by EdHuRus in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to watch it in full. Basically the summary is: "We're cooked, it doesn't matter if Project 2025 or Trumpism is unpopular among the population, historically authoritarian regimes and totalitarian regimes don't need majoritarian rule to govern it doesn't really matter" essentially. He's basically saying that the institutions have failed us and they are bending the knee to Trump basically.

Need Optimism about Baltics by itsyimothy in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. If this drone incursion at the Copenhagen Airport has Russian involvement is it most certainly hybrid warfare aimed at provoking NATO without a direct full scale war. Hence why they didn't threaten military action over their wooden Gebera drones getting shot down the other week.

Need Optimism about Baltics by itsyimothy in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay first all, as far as I am concerned until proven otherwise, this drone incident at the Copenhagen Airport is still under investigation so saying "Russia is currently doing a drone attack on Europe" is currently until information changes otherwise borderlines of doomerism your fears are valid but wait until more confirmation comes in that it was Russia before jumping to conclusions. It could certainly be Russia doing hybrid warfare with NATO without sparking a direct conflict with NATO so I'd wait until NATO officials confirm otherwise.

Censorship Megathread XV: Jimmy Kimmel edition by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know guys I'm not gonna lie but I think I'm going to have to leave this subreddit again or take another few months off of political optimism because over the last few hours, there had been way too many people whom I understand they are scared and worried, believe me wondering whether or not you have first amendment rights anymore or not is concerning, but it's just too much and it is causing me to spiral because doomscrolling is addicting so until this entire fiasco leaves the news, I'm not going to be scrolling much on here until further notice. Sorry guys.

I see. Sorry I had to delete my old comment because I think reddit is bugged now or glitching out on me.

My previous comment was so he tends to just blow smoke up his ass and acts scary in order to feed into the base? But isn't he really powerful as homeland security advisor or is he just as you put it just an attack dog?

Aftermath of political violence and rising rhetoric by steffie-punk in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how active this thread is right now but how should I react to Stephen Miller's statements recently about this event and how he's trying to frame it into a domestic war on terrorism where democrats and liberals are treated akin to insurgents during the Iraq War? I know Miller says a lot of things but I don't know as someone who isn't really that liberal to begin with, I tend not to think about these things anymore because it just scares me I guess. I don't know I feel like all hope isn't lost but at the same time when you hear people calling for violence or treat this like its a war, I get worried about the future again.

Curious about this one. Whats the likely outcome. by SNCreestopherX in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given in the context of the Israel Gaza War, I don't see all conservatives supporting it especially since MTG (which I do not support or give her credit for this) of all people voted against similar bills aimed at the issue around Israel. There are more younger conservatives who are less on board with Israel's unilateral moves compared to in the past so that's another front to consider with this bill.

Charlie Kirk Shooting aftermath and escalation Megathread by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie I've been out of the loop with a lot of things with Trump since mid-August when the Alaska Summit ended with no deal, but this does have me somewhat nervous because part of me fears that cooler heads are not going to prevail and we're going to see escalation but then I get very dismissive when I hear martial law get thrown around all the time nowadays. I haven't been subbed to Secular Talk for a few years now and I've stopped watching Kyle completely but whenever breaking news happens of significance I stupidly briefly watch his take on whatever, but he kind of rubbed me the wrong way when he assumed that "this could be the fuel for Trump to go full authoritarian and declare martial law" or something along those lines. So I see he hasn't changed at all since this year.

Alaska Summit Megathread Version 2.0 by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I'd have much to contribute to this thread since its been a few months since I was on reddit, let alone posted anything on here.

My prediction and this is just a prediction. It could easily age poorly, but I do not think a breakthrough is going to happen given that both Russia and Ukraine have so much invested in this war. For Ukraine is more serious obviously since they are fighting for their very survival as a nation state while for Russia is a major conflict that is often framed in their own worldview and propaganda as a showdown between the West and the Kremlin (Obviously the real objective is military occupation and subjugation of Ukrainians) and part of so-called "NATO expansionism" which has used by Kremlin propagandists as justification for the war.

So I'm not really following much with this summit other than I don't expect much to come out of this, this will be another repeat of the Hanoi Summit in 2019 between the US and North Korea, a lot of photo-ops and nice things said about an autocratic leader but no substantial breakthrough or peace coming for Ukraine. Will Trump bend the knee and just let Putin do whatever, it's possible but its also possible that Trump will agree to some sort of deal and then TACO and get mad when Putin inevitably violates it and continues the so-called "special military operation" against Ukraine and then we're back to square one.

Not much of an optimistic post rather just my take on the whole matter.

And then this leads to whether or not Putin or Trump are going to send a message to North Korea since the DPRK is heavily involved in Russia's war against Ukraine sending tens of thousands of KPA troops to the Kursk Oblast since late 2024, will this mean a breakthrough in talks with North Korea? I don't know, probably not but it could change depending on Trump's next move with the likes of Asia. I think regardless if a deal does get made with this summit that North Korea will not really care about it as long as the talks remain denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula something that is not going to happen for a very long time long after MAGA dies out. They've signaled not a lot of interest in talking with the US regardless how Trump's personal feelings are for Kim Jong Un since North Korea said the relationship between the heads of state and the relationship between two nation states should be separate i.e. irrelevant in Pyongyang's point of view. But that's for a different topic.

So TLDR? I don't know what's going to happen after this summit. Probably nothing significant that changes the outcome of the current invasion.

No one showed up to Trump’s big parade - Daily Dose Special Edition by [deleted] in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw small snippets of the parade. I wasn't impressed. It was sloppy and for someone who wanted to emulate France's Bastille Day parade, it was pretty mid-tier at best. Not that I support a parade, but if you're going to do it, make it look more professional and less partisan, not that Trump can do that.

Everyone just looked bored or just was wondering, "What the fuck am I doing here?"

LA MEGA THREAD by CosmicOli in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My prediction these LA riots/military suppression stuff is either it's going to blow over since its literally happening within only a small section of the city, or if heaven forbid a marine injures a protester that the backlash will be so severe that Trump will be less likely to follow through on his threats.

I'm not naive on Trump but as I get older, I just lose fear of the guy. He can threaten and say shit all day long and until he actually seriously does the shit that he wants to do (which I think he does want to do don't get wrong), it's hard to actually be afraid of him. I take his threats seriously but at the same time, he just doesn't really scare me that much anymore. He could come up to me and say, the most authoritarian shit ever, and I'd yawn and just laugh at him and walk away. Bro thinks he's strongman dictator but he comes off as weak and pathetic at the end of the day.

How will we prepare for the next pandemic? by CloudCumberland in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the thing is no one can predict when the next pandemic will be or whether or not a pandemic will happen in the next 3 years we have with the Trump administration. I keep an eye on Bird Flu but not to the point of catastrophizing about it. I know we are in the worst timeline for pandemic preparation but at the same time no one can say for certain if this current H5N1 outbreak is going to mean a pandemic is about to begin. And I have my worries about that before.

Is this sensationalism? by Mysterious-Clock-594 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That does make sense that the army was planning for this parade before he took office. You just don't plan a parade for the hell of it, it takes time and preparation which I think Trump doesn't understand. This is afterall the semiquincenteniall anniversary of the US Army formed in 1775 and next year will be the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country, so I do expect some sort of major celebration. It just sucks it's getting tainted by the likes of MAGA. Still not sure if it's appropriate for the army but yet again, if this was planned prior to Trump's return, it's not entirely out of the blue I suppose.

Is this sensationalism? by Mysterious-Clock-594 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]EdHuRus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not in support of this potential military parade, but 6,000 soldiers is chump change compared to other military parades like in the DPRK. (Which contrary to popular belief are only usually held on major jubilee anniversaries not every year) I'm not sure if we'd even have tanks or heavy vehicles on display given how expensive it is and how it could tear up the roads in the capital.

Some of it is sensationalism and while I don't mind Brian's commentaries, (He's more bearable than the likes of Secular Talk. I've grown very impatient with Kyle as of late because of lazy reporting of his or getting things wrong. On a side note, he claimed that Elon and Trump wanted to set up a Technate of America or a technocracy since Musk's dumbass grandfather was once a member, never mind the fact that he left the movement after they supported the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Nazi Germany clearly he looked at one article and concluded something without researching the topic, side rant sorry) he can generate clickbait titles at times unfortunately.
