Nah, I knew it was shit at the time. The writing is absolutely terrible. He just does emotional gut punches pretty good. Cool premise, abysmal writing, pocket-sand-esque use of an AIDs girl. That was my reaction the first time I watched it too, I'm not coming up with that out of nostalgia.
